Clutch Master Cylinder Seal Replacement

I've run a search but not found any details on how to fit replacement seals in the clutch master cylinder. Is it easier to leave master cylinder in place and work from footwell, rather than the hasle of complete cylinder removal and bench repair. Is the rod held in cylinder by a circlip and is it easy to remove? Any special tools required?

A small pair of long nosed pliars worked for me on the circlip.

I decided to take the thing out, as then you can get a good look at whether the bore has been scored by anything. (If this is the case, then it's new cylinder time.)
