UnderPowered Griffith 500

I'm new to this site although I've been an addict for ages. I live in NZ & have one of the few griffs.

Had some problems recently with being underpowered. It is only producing 180bhp at the rear wheels - last year had an engine rebuild, camshaft replaced (although this was a dubious aftermarket version. I have a couple of questions.

1. What are the reasons it could be underpowered.

2. what are the specs for the ideal cam

I utterly adore the car & drive it to work everyday. Weekends are a treat, there are lots of great open (empty) roads down here). Would love to get this car pumping to its true potential & really appreciate any advice given.

There are many reasons why it is not producing the power it should, these range from mapping, through cam issues to basic setup issues.

Your best bet would be to get it onto a rolling road where a diagnosis can be made. I would think the cam itself may be suspect from your post, plus probably mapping issues.

180 at the wheels is 40bhp or so Hps out from a healthy standard ()figure for a 500 IMHO.
When you say dubious cam profile, is that you're not sure what it is, or the guy fitting it wasn't sure either . If everything is healthy it could be that the cam timing wasn't dialled in correctly, if guessed at .
If you have the spec of the cam fitted then compare it to say something like Kent 214/218/234, data available online on their site somewhere. Is yours of a similar grind , most successful RV8 grinds will not be a million miles away from them and it should give you a feel IMHO.

Then again a lack of power could just as easily be one of a thousand other things too .
