4.3 Starter motor problems ?

A few weeks back when I started the Griff (4.3) there was just a clunk then nothing. Second time it started Ok so I assummed the starter had jammed. Today I got back from a blast, started the car to put it in the garage and bang, the noise I get now is something horrendous, like a eumatic drill (same as if you engaged the starter whilst the engine was running but louder). So I pushed her into the garage. I think something bad has happened to the starter motor. It sounds God awful and broken. Where exactly is the starter motor and anyone know what model the Griff (and I assume Chimeara) 4.3 used ? Thanks.

If it's in the same place as mine it's under the exhaust manifold on the right hand side of the engine, black with think red wire going into it.
Yep same on my 97, it's on the offside, under the exhaust manifold, I had to get to mine from under the car, removal is dead simple (once you've done it once). I really am no expert so hopefully somebody more knowledgable will be along but I guess it may be worth taking a look to see if the teeth on the flywheel are damaged.

Thanks for the reponses. It doues sound like the pinion is spinning against the flywheel rather than turning it, I think that's the awful noise I can hear. I'm assumming that if any teeth broke, I'd see some fragments under the car ?
Possibly or they might still be in the housing making more noise.
This is my old one and the newer smaller prestolite one. you can see where the broken teeth may sit.

Mine was bolted using them bloody allen bolts neede a fair few extensions and an elbow to get at the top and a little guidance from someone looking in from above.
If yours has these allen bolts I would recommend changing them for normal ones.

Just been to Startright and manages to source a new starter. The bloke there produced the same starter with the same broken bit and tells me it's because the timing is out. There's no signs of the timing being out but I'm interested - anyone else heard of incorrect timing causing the starter motor to crack ?
