Replacement alternator
Discussion
Hi all
1996 4L Problem
Was driving yesterday - all OK until about 300 yds from home the engine began to misfire badly and the battery indicator dropped to about 25%. Then there was loud fan belt squeal, Limped home, turned the ignition off and restarted - all fine. I am assuming that it is alternator related given the sudden drop is volts and the noise. But why did it seem to free itself? Maybe temporary bearing seizure?
Anyway, started to look at a replacement alternator but that's not so easy. The current one must be 20 years old ( had it replaced once before- we've had it 30 years) and I can't find a direct replacement. I don't want to have to undertake any major mounting mods. Any advice on my diagnosis, and a sure fire replacement?

It may be your 100A fuse, if this is cracked (it's happened to me on 2 TVRs), you may not get a charge warning light (on a Chimaera I had a faint glow, on my present Griff, nothing). The voltage will spike up and down at the ECU and can cause rough running.
If it is the alternator, I'd have thought a Range Rover item would do (?) but I don't know for sure, I haven't had to change one.

Should be a type 127-65amp unit, some come with the cooling fan and pulley so shop around if you need these parts too, type you have should be like this .............. https://vitesse-ltd.co.uk/product/alternator-new-a...
