WHAT GEARBOX OIL ?????????

Hi all. Could you tell me what gearbox oil to use in the Rover box. The manual says "S.S.80" but this does not mean anything to me and there is no plate on the car (V8s) .It is used for heavy track use and I am going to change it after every season (not sure if that is necessary or not but it can't hurt). Again I am assuming that Mobil would be the best but don't know what to ask for.

Have a look at the Castrol website - they have an interactive oil guide which is pretty good. They recommend their TQ Dexron III oil for both the gearbox and the power steering. I shall be giving this a go in the near future.

go for a 70 weight fully or semi synthetic oil. we use comma semi, atf fluid just does not have the qualities to make your gearbox last and 80/90 weight gear oil makes the change quite hard

I use Castrol SMX-S fully synthetic, had it in the box for two years now.

Hymmmm, None the wiser, Does the number mean the "thickness" of the oil.Spoke to a friend (jigs)and his Griff manual says mobil ATF220 (it has the Rover box), does anyone have any views on this. Did get it changed at the begining of the year and have noticed that when car is cold it is very hard to get into gear (not sure what was put into it). My Chim has ATF oil in it (why do TVR like the automatic stuff when it is not an auto box)

The higher the grade the thicker the oil.

ATF was specified in some applications because it made it easier to get it into gear in freezing conditions. But it makes the gear change worse the rest of the time, best stay away from it.

The Griff gearbox is out of the Camaro/corvette. You could try checking with the boys in the PH corvette area

Just tried the Castrol site, Looked good, even had V8S on it, looked at gear oil, told me "TQD" tries to get data sheet and it said it did not reconise TQD. Now I am wondering if tqd stands for something else??????

comma say use AQM which is a auto transmission fluid its (motors dexron 11@ spec fluid)(dont ask)1.6-1.9l.

My Griff ('94 500, SD1 box)plate states gearbox oil should be ATF220. Last Service I changed it to Castrol SMX-S because I'd read that this was nowadays recommended for this box - but I've recently changed back to ATF220 because I was not happy with the feel of the gearchange - I am much happier with ATF220. I found that with SMX-s you could very often feel the gears meshing (although it never "crunched" as you changed up - especially from 1st to 2nd. This suggests to me that the synchro-mesh isn't operating as it's supposed to.

ordered the atf220 today. Think I will go with TVR's recommendation. Never was very adventurous. Thanks for all the help.
