Cleaning the engine

...and I dont mean the internals by putting additives in.
What I mean is the external appearance. Can any of you guys advise on what you do? Apparently TVR (and my garage) advise against steam cleaning so as to avoid getting water in the electrics etc (seems sensible) so what do you advise?
My initial thoughts are to get in there and work my way down the engine bit-by-bit (dont fancy a full blown marathon session in the engine and I dont have facilities either apart from the front drive!!)each time I clean the outside. Best methods and cleaning agents for this?
Im thinking a small scrubbing brush/toothbrush and XXXX cleaning agent....

To anybody reading this thread,please DONT help Jeffsy until after November 6th!
The problem with steam cleaning and pressure washing is that the jet of water is high pressure and difficult to direct accurately. So it can get into places it shouldn't.
I've used Jizer (a degreaser) and hot water from a watering can (no 'rose' fitted) to wash the Jizer off. By agitating the Jizer with a paint brush you get amazingly good results with little effort. For those harder to reach areas I've used brake cleaner and masses of kitchen roll. A screwdriver comes in handy to shift stubborn stuff. These techniques won't give you a 'show' finish, but they're a relatively pain-free way to a clean, honest albeit used-looking engine.

. I've realised that as i'm going to help you now,the 'contest' will become null and void(rule 39,subsection b,paragraph 2)
. Autoglym have recently run an advert in various car mags for their engine cleaner.It gives you the complete guide to cleaning and finishing the engine.They reccomend a radiator brush for best results,then after youve rinsed all the engine cleaner off,they say to spray their vinyl and rubber care over all hoses etc.Sounds pretty good to me.
