Water cooled heads?

Perhaps this is for the tecnical section, but I'll try it here: Can anybody tell me why the heads rear coolant outlets always are blocked off in the intake casting? How is the water supposed to circulate in the head? Is there any water-jacket around the two mid-cylinders at all (nr 3, 5, 4 and6)? Pt

You have to visualize the water system as a whole. Water is pumped into the front of the block and flows to the back. There are various water passages that allow the water up into the heads. The water flows forwards through the heads, and out of the front of the heads into the central collector in the bottom of the intake manifold and from there past the thermostat to the radiator. The longitudinal flow is essential to distribute the water throughout the block and heads.
