Hi, just playing with my recently acquired 4.3BV (I don't think it is original, but been a BV for 10 years plus). I have got around to insulating the exhaust to lower under bonnet temp, and replacing the heat shields, and decided to have a look at the chassis. Once I had cleaned off the road dirt imagine my shock to find the powder coating still on!! It even has powder coating on the corner plates on the front outriggers! I was so shocked I had to come inside and sit down.

What am I going to do all winter now?

Yeah, I've heard powder coat sticks to filler really well.

Seriously you've obviously got a top car there - keep on top of it! Was it a PH sale by the way or did you pick it up somewhere else?

Hi, got it via pistonheads. It has an unusual history, it had 5 owners and did 21000 miles in three years, it has then done 15,000 in the last 10 years!

Somewhere between new and 3 years I recon it became a 4.3 BV, it was sold by Central TVR as a 4.3 BV at 3 years old (for £26k! - and they should know!). I am not sure it started as a 4.3 even, from the engine number. Does anyone know what element of the engine number tells the capacity, I thought it was "40P" somewhere in the middle that said 4.0 L petrol - anyone know? I am checking via DVLA for capacity mods to the log book.

I have all mots to verify, and looking at the chassis, I don't think it has ever been wet. So all in all I am happy, even if it was a 4.0 litre to start with.

Not sure if this helps but I have the factory 4.3BV publicity car. The engine number is 47A43P587V. Now you mention it the A43 in the middle is probably the capacity.

If you are really sad and dig deeper, a lot of the BV engines have a V at the end of the number, although I understand that this is not always the case.

Incidentally, when I bought the car, I wanted to make sure that the engine was the original one. So I called the factory and for I think about £30, I got a printout of the the full spec of the original car (including engine number and engine spec) as it left the line. This allowed me to confirm that the engine numbers were still the same.

It gives you the colour of the dashtop, paint code, extras etc. Expensive for one sheet of paper but interesting if you have the griff ilness!

It might be the quickest way to find out?

Cheers

Not been around Lancashire much then! Would either have done a tenth of the mileage, or got wet.

I find that it is so hard to get access to the chassis to ensure all rust has been removed and rust proofed that it is safer to get the rust off as best possible, and cover the chassis in waxoyl. If you paint over less than perfectly de-rusted tubes, they just rust away where you cannot see them.

The waxoyl on the tubes most prone to wet/debris off the wheels need doing a couple of times a year, but most of the waxoyl on my Griff chassis looks OK two years later.

Only downside is the chassis looks a horrid mess - but I do not admire it as often as the top of the car!

Nic - Out of interest how much did you pay for it?

£12,500, just a month ago.

It is an odd car, valued as a 4L, £12,500 is top money - but it is very tidy indeed. Valued as a 4.3, it is about right, and as a 4.3 BV it is a bargain. I am lucky that TVR purists don't really exist, modified seems okay.

What are you doing, selling, buying? Just interested?

Hi Nic,

I guess I am just pondering if I should sell the BV. Itys dead genuine but I havent a clue what to ask for it and indeed if its the time to sell it.
