December Sprint Mag

In the December Sprint mag on page 28 there is a pic of Dave Mc Loughlin's fine Griff 500 motor showing a close up of the engine bay.

Two questions for dave or who ever may know.

1 What is the make of the HT leads and supplier?

2 The make of the chrome coil and the supplier?

And any spec please.

not 100% but isnt the mallory coil rather bling looking or I suppose it may be a SS surround but I doubt it.

Hi Paul,

The ignition leads are Magnecor 8.5mm KV85 Competition ones (part no.8513)- supplied by Tim at ACT

The uprated coil is a chrome Mallory one (part no.29216)- supplied by TVR Power

I've had them fitted for a few years now and have no complaints with the performance or looks of either of them!

Hi Paul,

Forgot to add, the leads were £96.69 and the coil was £64.63 -
but obviously that's a few years ago now.Hopefully,they won't have gone up too much!

Do you need the metal plug adaptors (Vaux Cav I think?) between the leads and plugs with the Magnecor leadset, or do the leads fit straight onto the plugs?

Has anyone found the need to replace these adaptors?

The extenders are there for two reasons,firstly to provide 5k resistance(written on the side of the extender),to give a fatter spark,then also to help with heat protection from the manifolds.You can run without them(i have in an emergency),as the leads will go straight on to the plugs(im talking std ones but magnecor should be the same),but its probably best not to in the long run.If you replace the extenders,there are some with no resistance value,so make sure you get a the same resistance value if replacing individually.I dont know if your magnecors have a resistance value themselves,as some leads do,in which case 0k extenders might be fine.

You can get the Mallory coil (29216) from Real Steel 01895 440505 for £37. I've had mine on for about a year and it works as good as it looks!!!!

Am i right in thinking that the Mallory Coil is of a chrome finnish or is it stainless steel with a good polishing?
My Magno's landed on Tuesday i then called Tim of ACT and asked the same question re the extenders and his reply was the same as Mike Mongoose's

Mack do you use the extender's with your Magno's?

Tim at ACT sells the extenders too - I believe much cheaper than anyone else.

So what are the symptoms of the extenders failing, mis-firing? poor radio reception? reduced engine power? Mine are 12 years old, but I dont want to replace them if there is no benefit.
