Air temperature sensor???

Just flicking through the bible tonight to find a calibration curve for my coolant temperature sensor and found a section about the "Air temperature sensor"

I've never seen this in the Griff, and can't see why you'd really need it given the Lucas system is mass airflow based and only controls the fuelling. (My Impreza STi has an intakeair temperature sensor to retard the timing etc if the air intake gets too hot. This is MAF based too.)

Is this a misprint - should it have been Fuel temperature? I know there's a fuel temperature sender in the LHS fuel rail...

It got my hopes up that I wouldn't have to install my own IAT sensor...

In the hotwire system, the only air temp sensor is the one built into the hotwire AFM. If you're replacing this with a speed-density or alpha-speed based system then you would need to use an air temp sender.

Removed in the new 2nd edition. Also confirms what Pete says about the flow meter performing the same function. The 520 has one. Cheap to get - just bolt into the air stream i.e. plenum's often used. Need to be careful about local heating though. Mine is used to effectively shutdown the engine if the air temp gets outrageous to protect it.
