Dash out or not?

A question for you knowledgeable chaps out there -
I have a 96 500 with a veneer dash and have noticed that one of the indicator repeater lights in the dash panel does not flash (the sound and actual indicators still function) so I am not too concerned, but I am contemplating replacing the boot opening push button (I have had a boot opening kit fitted so I no longer use the button) with a starter button kit.
Rather than take out the veneer dash front which I understand is tricky, is it poosible to access and get at the current boot push button fixings by taking out the radio and adjacent ventilator?
How are the push buttons held in?

Push buttons are held in a metal strip that bolts to the back of the veneered dash. If you have small hands, you could unbolt it although the wires behind there might defeat you.
It's possible to change bulbs the same way, but again you need small hands and you don't need to mind getting them scratched from all the tie wrap ends that infest that part of the car.
If it were me, I'd lift the dash out. I've done it several times now, and seem to be reasonably proficient...

I had the dash out on mine to sort the washer hoses, and to reglue the stud holding the switches to the back of the dash, didn't seem to present any difficulties. Just take your time and dont force it. Read Steve Heaths bible it will help identify where the fixings are. You must be very careful not to flex the metal panel or the veneer may crack or separate. If I were doing the job you contemplate I would take the dash out!
I think I would too, it's really not that tricky although mine has the Leven stainless dash so it won't crack like the veneer might.Take the dash out - you'll struggle working 'blind'. See here for an idea of how:
