Odometer stuck at 39,999, know a quick fix?

Hi,

As the title says, the odometer on the Griff is stuck. I know it's a very common problem but still means its a pain in the arse for me. It got stuck just before Christmas and having hardly used the car recently it's not bothered me, but considering that I'm now looking to change the Griff for something else I wanted to get it done asap, besides it's just not right anyway.

Austec have told me it'd take them quite a while to get it sorted as they'd have to send it away so I was just wondering if anybody knows a quick fix to get it working again, or could recommend somebody else.

two most common fixes = reverse for a long way or wait until it fixes itself.

Ours does this every time it reaches a x9,999. We get aound 200 'free'miles this way! Coincidentaly ours is currently stuck on 39,999 also.

The advice above is good - it will eventualy decide to correct itself, or try going out for a serious blat and repeatedly pressing the odometer.

Mine fixed itself too, it gets stuck every 999's for a few miles but was also stuck at 29,999 for prob 200 miles, just using it got it to budge.

Mines also stuck on 39'999 and I've so far done 500 miles forwards/backwards, banging dash, constantly pushing the reset etc. nothing seems to have worked. It's going in for a service in 2 weeks so will be sorted then at Offords. They've told me that in about 60% of cases taking the speedo unit out and giving it a few taps can be enough to free up the mechanism otherwise it'll need to be sent off to speedycables which can take between 1 & 2 weeks.

Had this happen on the Chimaera. When I queried it, was told mostly they sort themselves out. Apparently too many of the same digit turning over at same time. Forgot about it and then noticed all was well again.

It happened to me at 37999 and I tried tapping glass, setting trip etc but had no effect. After a couple of hundred miles I removed speedo from dash and gave the body a couple of quite hefty taps which caused the nines to rollover to 38000. It has happened again a couple of days ago at 39999, so dash will be coming out out again and speedo will be getting another bashing

I've never tried this, but maybe a bit of assistance from a ladies battery powered friend might help?

It's a "feature" to assist with those who go for limited mileage insurance policies, IMHO

Yes. Your old Griff needed this feature...

It happened again to it at 94,999 miles and watching the 1000 mile tickovers has become something of an event.

We have had 400-500 miles for free out of this latest one (39,999) - theres a chance we will be going to Virginia Waters this Sunday so we'll see if it stays the same...

Any other Griffs going there Sunday??

I just bought Mrs J a car rug as the roof will be off - minus 2 or not!!! (err...unless its raining in which case we probably wouldnt go anyway )

Bluey's done **189 miles so far. The 44 thou are invisible all the while now, whereas for a time it was only when things got warm we could read the digits, now there's only the hundreds down at the best of times. Can this be fixed or do I need to replace it?

It's never happened on mine..... yet. Why does it happen? Where does the odometer come from, and does this happen to the donor car, if not, why not???

How easy would it be to use the later type of speedo with the digital display?The contacts on the rear are different,but what else would be involved?
