Sports Exhaust Options ?

As the title says really -

Just to add a nicer sound - do you need to look at a complete system or just the rear pipes? (Instead of de-catting etc. etc.)

Any experience?

Jon, why not remove the pre-cats for a sound improvement? I heard one at RVT (Ian's in Middlewich) and it sounded very nice

Its a possibility but I want to explore all avenues before I make any decisions.

Just in case you're not familiar with it, for just changing the sound most people have the standard exhaust modified by having the rear box cut open and all the wadding removed, then have the perforated pipes sleeved and then it all sealed back up again. I've had this done and it certainly makes it sound different!! Noticeably louder and with a harder, meaner sounding edge to it. And trust me, it doesn't affect the power, mine's been measured at Austec and power's not something it's short of after having that done!!!

Do you need to adjust fuel or mix if you remove the pre cats ?
Is this a mod you have done? was it difficult?
What about mot testing will it cause the car to fail do you know?

Not had it done but plannig to in April when I put my car back on the road. Spoke to Ian at RVT in Middlewich (Cheshire) and he does MOT's. He tells me that there's no problem with MOT's on cars with the pre-cats removed. Not sure about fueling but I wouldn't have thought so. Give Ian a call he'll tell you all about it. It can be a little tricky getting them out so I'm so I'm going to get Ian to do it.

Offord's do a really good cherry bomb conversion that make any V8 sound like thunder. it gives the exhaust note the most delicious gurgle at the low end of the rev range and a more hard edged bellow when you really give it some. it really is good!

Craig, joint TVRCC RO (on the Chim forum) has just removed his pre cats and has posted some useful advice and piccies!

As far as I have read doing this may not give you much sound difference and is definitely a more costly/timely job than removing the baffles. I have just had a straight thru stainless which I am pleased with but if you want the full monty go for the 'cherry bombs'!

I've had both done, pre-cats first and then the de-baffled cherry bombs from Offords. I had my manifolds replaced with ACT stainless de-cats which look nice but TBH there is not a lot of difference in noise level once this has been done. TBH I think most people just get a placebo effect on having this done.
The rear box conversion though is another matter. It really does deepen up the exhaust note and sounds fantastic. My chim pops and bangs on the over-run and under power it sounds fantastic, it now reads around 112db.
Cost for the box conversion is circa £140 depending on where you have it done.

Anyone know the size of pipe that’s needed to sleeve the exhaust? Fancy having a go but want to make sure I can get the pipe before I cut the exhaust open.
