Removing carbon cannister

Has anyone done this?

Mine's looking a bit worse for wear, so maybe some weight saving is in order.

Can I simply vent the pipe from the tank to atmosphere and block the pipe from the plenum? Or could that result in filling bits of car with flamables?

Out of interest, when does the purge solenoid do things? Presumably it switches to purge the cannister when the engine is warm, under low load and low RPM? Does it stay switched, or is there some modulation?

It's a large (heavy) black cylinder filled with activated charcoal.

It is located under the driver's side light in a Griff.

It filters petrol vapour from the fuel tank vent and periodically a solenoid switches to allow the engine to suck the vapour into the engine and burn it.
