How should the air filter mount on the early Griff 500’s?

I have am just in the process of fitting a alloy rad to my Griff, have taking the old rad out I noticed the cylinder air filter seems to just be jammed into place over the top of the rad, is that right? Mine does have air con as well as an oil cooler at the front so not sure if the makes a difference.

mine is a early 500 on a 93 and it sits inside a round grp cover with 2 bolts on the upper.

Oh right, mines not got anything like that, where does it mount?

above the rad towards the nearside of the car.

Sounds like it may be fitted with a Chimaera filter.

Anyone got a picture of what it should actually look like??

It's possible it was fitted with a chimera filter when serviced in Malaysia as I think they only had chimeras there.

Paul on mine a 96 its the same, a cylindrical filter it is held by a bracket that you can undo by going through the nosecone appature( well it is on mine). Then the whole lot can be pulled out.
I think it varied and there are 3 or 4 different installations like some being boxed in for example.

Yes mine was a rectangular flat filter in a fibreglass box when I bought the car which was sat across an apeture low down under the frount of the car facing downwards (98 car).

My oil cooler actually sits in the nose bit behind the number plate, maybe it's in the way of where the filter should mount, just seems that with it's current position it'll be taking a lot of hot air in from the rad which can't be too good. I need to make up a new bracket for the oil cooler as the alloy rad doesn't have the mount points on it so maybe I’ll try and relocate it so I can get the filter into cooler air. as said if anyone has a pic that would be very helpful as I looked through the SH book but couldn't find anything.

Big thanks to Old64er for the photo's of the air box type thing, think I’ll try and source one if I can, that or make one, of course one in alloy would look good and go with the new rad lol.
