help - fan not working

97 Griff. Couldn't figure out why engine temp has been higher than normal lately, then realised only one of the fans was coming on. Checked fuses - both OK. Pulled out relays & noticed one had burnt/melted mark around one of the pins, replaced relay, but fan still not working. Replacement is not a name-brand relay, cheap supermarket job (all I could get hold of), although the rating is the same as on melted one. What should I try next?? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi tj,

Swap the connections over to each fan, this will establish if the fault is with the fan or the wiring.

Check the electrical connectors for the fans as well. They can often corrode and no longer make good contact.

Also, swop the relays over. This should prove whether the new one is working and correct.

On my Chimaera (and I'm assuming the Griff is the same) they are right next to the fans themselves. On the Chimaera this is at the bottom of the fans and they're often tucked away under the fans where they often sit in a pool of water (or damp conditions at best) and slowly corrode.

Best advice is to unclip them, clean up the connections, cut some tyre inner tube abd pace over one of the connectors, reconnect them, plastic tie them to ensure the best connection, pull the inner tube over so it cover sth connectors and tape up each end of the inner tube.

I had this exact problem on mine, It was into Tower view for a service and they told me its a common problem, and suggested the best solution was to re-wire the fans. Which they did, it added a bit to the bill but the fans work great now..
