I could do with some help as I`m feeling rather deflated at the mo.
I am looking to sell my lovely S2 and move onto a griff, no problem yet, but on phoning insurance companies today my well made plans may be off the rails.
my s2 is kept overnight on my driveway, nice quiet area, security camera and motion sensor lights installed ect, however, it seems I cannot get insurance on a griff at a reasonable price unless it is in a garage, this is fair enough, but I would expect to pay a higher premium for the higher risk. but it seems that classic ins policies will allow it for my s but not a griff, so I will have to have a normal car policy, trying to mirror my no claims from my everyday car, but as yet getting someone to even give a price is like looking for a needle in a haystack! and its bound to be high enough to put me off getting the car.
does anyone here have to keep their car outside?
have problems getting planning permission for garage, but I`ve just talked my mrs into thinking a griff is a great idea, I`ll never talk her into moving to a house that already ahs a garage!!

please help.

When I got my griff , I had been looking at V8S's and had been told by my then insurers that it would be just £100 extra per year over my TR6.
When I purchased the gtiff ,I called them , thinking same year ,engine, as the V8S.

Ooooh nooo another £500 on top.

Left them and went to Classicline, very helpfull, and so far they havent charged me for any mods I have made.

As far as I'm concerned they are the dogs doo daa's

If your confident about your security at home tell them you have a garage!

Not that I would lie or anything

But I do have a garage.(incase Mr James is a PH member) and thinks I am trying to pull the wool!

I used Classicline as well - 10/10 - but I have a garage - might be worth some time on the phone working your way thru the ads in Sprint - someone must be able to insure a car on your driveway.
Or you could try a tent-type pop-up plastic garage - insurer won't ask if it's brick-built with a tiled roof

Hi Clive,

I had the same sinking feeling when I was considering buying my Griff 4.3 last year.

I tried every name associated with 'Classic' policies, trawled the classic mags, the internet and tried the usual suspects advertising in Sprint and thought I was destined to remain without the Griff. All wanted a garage or simply quoted significant four figure sums and the garage.

To be honest, each persons tale of insurance joy seemed to be a misery for me when I called the same broker, but I came up trumps with Classic broker 'Asset Trust' who had my policy underwritten by 'Link Insurance'.

Details are:
4.3 insured on the drive with CAT 2 immobiliser
Agreed value
5000 miles per annum

My experience, and it may differ from others is that Griffs cost a bit of wonga to insure and I accepted that so my premium of £735 is acceptable to me given I had a total loss claim for a porsche 968 two years ago that totalled a significant 5 figure sum.

Phoning for insurance quotes felt a bit of a lottery but you could do worse than try... and that's give up! Call as many as you can stomach, you should hopefully come up trumps.

Good suggestion - lie to the insurer. Car uninsured as a result. What happens if something happens to it then you wont get paid out. Lots of bad things could happen to your car in the drive beyond just theft.

We keep the Griff on the driveway. I'm confident it won't be stolen, unless the thief knows more about TVR mechanicing and ECU mapping than I do, and he brings his own radiator & fuseboard...

Keep looking. I found A-plan reasonably priced last year, and Norwich union this year. Neither asked for a garage, just a decent alarm.

thanks guys, like you say its soul destroying and fustrating but the thought of finally owning one is now so close I`m not going to give up!
I`ve considered getting the parambulator fold up style garage, but insurance consider a garage to be secure,ie brick built, bit I will still get one to protect it from the elements.
I`ll just have to keep phoning
but to open up a can of worms, there is a lot of 500 griffs on the market, and an m plate for 13K ish, seems better than a pre cat at 10 to 11K, but if both were comparable condition etc, which would be the btter buy???

Clive:-

No doubt you will get a varied bunch of replies to that question,

And I believe there is no definative answer, you pays your money and makes your choice,

There are pro and cons either way you go,If you are serious about the impending purchase then I strongly advice you get both the following books that will help you with your decision.

1) The TVR Griffith and Chimaera by Steve Heath (the BIBLE)
2) The TVR Griffith story by Roger Shackleton

Both are superb points of reference for all things Griff!

Good luck in your search

If its any help, i've been through exactly the same for my 500, no one would touch me on a classic policy without a garage. I've ended up having to find companies that would mirror the NCB from my daily driver as you've mentioned. Several would do it, and Peart were the best, coming back at around the 600 mark (31, full ncb, average area).

So far, no one has messed with the car on my drive (touch wood) and it is covered most of the time. Personally, i'm more worried about the casual tw*t who just want to quickly key it, covering it up makes it more of an effort. Out of sight, out of mind and all that, but the security that you already have should put them off there.

MSM (brilliant customer service )mirrored my no claims bonus for my Griff (my first TVR ).Unfortunately they were a bit expensive for me this year but I have now got six years NCB instead of one years when insuring with someone else.Went with A-plan ( no comment on customer service at the Mo !!! )

Just my 2p worth - I have my Chim insured with Norwich Union - had a similar tale to you no one would give me a quote under £1500 !!. NU came up with £735 including upgraded brakes and suspension , car on drive and I only have 1 years no claims.

Mine is insured to be left on the drive - Direct Line gave me an excellent quote & were not worried about lack of a garage. However now have a garage courtesy of the local council/housing association who rent me a garage for the princely sum of £6.50 per week - a bargain, nevermind the peace of mind, lack of birdsh*t on the car etc

Got an excellent result from A mannings today I originally spoke to them last friday and was left feeling really depressd, but called them back today to chase up my qoute and spoke to a very knowledgable chap called richard, so can park on my drive overnight and it`ll cost me approx £485, so I can now start some serious griff hunting, but there is qiute a bit to choose from, thre bible is on its way in the post so I`ll get some reading done before setting out!
thanks for all contributions.
