You can get a spanner in there to enable you to remove the badge, without removing the airbox, but, when you come to put it back on,you only have to drop the small and fiddly little nut once, and the airbox needs to come out!Judging by your other post it looks like you ought to remove the box and replace the badge at the same time as the filter!

Its a bit of a "bent back "job, its further inside to the nuts than you think.
Also If I remember the nuts are above the airfilter, so that may have to come out too.
But in the end its only two (5mm I think) nuts, so it shouldnt be too bad.

Exactly what I was thinking... Do the two jobs at the same time : )

On the Chim the front badge is on the bonnet (the bit that lifts up to get to the engine) rather than being fixed to the front of the car...

... I forgot that I'd wandered into "conventional" bonnet design territory..

Blimey! If that's what you look like, perhaps you should buy a Chimaera...

Rich,
The nuts are 8mm (maybe 7mm). Virtually impossible with airbox on and you will drop the nut and/or washer. When you refit I suggest a spring washer so you don't overtighten as the stud breaks easily (been there done that).
As already said do it when you replace the filter.

Right can I raise this one again? I just spent a hour back-bent over getting the badge off the front of the car - what a bugger of a job that was. Now my next question... How the hell do you get the air box out? In my Griff it seems the radiators are in the way? It's all loose but it just won't come out over the top of the rads. I was going to fit one of Tim Lamont's ACT/K&N panel filters but I can't see how I can get into the bloody filter thing past the plastic box with it stuck in there! Rich...

p.s. I wonder how many dealers actually replace the air filter when they service the car and instead simply oil it from underneath? looks like mine's never been out!!!

I found that on my first griff(96)the filter box came out relatively easily, but with a squeeze. On my current griff('00),the box could not be removed,no matter how you tried, there just wasn't quite enough room,so they do vary.Strangely, after replacing the old type rad for the newer tvr ali one,i can now remove the airbox, just!the bottom line is Rich, that you dont need to actually remove the box to change the filter, but removing a well stuck filter from inside there without taking the box out isn't easy for sure, but as i said, possible!I was lucky enough to be able to remove my box by the time i needed to change the badge, which helps a hell of a lot, wouldnt want to try it without removing the box to be honest. If you cant get the box out after unbolting it,then the only way is to move the rad i guess?Best of luck mate!
PS.if your going to chatsworth, bring your filter with you and i'll change it for you if you like?

Oh shit! Unfortunately can't make Chatsworth which is shame as I really love that part of the country but I've got a wedding to go to on Saturday and on Sunday my Daughter is running the London Marathon so she deserves my support.

So from what you're saying I can replace the filter just by sliding it under the box and trapping it in place? Worth a try? I certainly don't want to disturb the radiator! TVRs eh, don't you love em...

Yes you can do it that way, thats how i do mine now.I find it tricky to clamp the box back down and keep it in line at the same time, but you get there in the end!Have a look at the filter from underneath afterwards,to ensure you have fitted it in squarely with no gaps.By the way, there are 2 bolts at one end of the box(n/side)and only one bolt at the other end, remove the single bolt completely, but dont completely remove the other two at the n/side end. Then when you come to refit the box,you place the lip under the metal tab at the n/side end,and lower it into place before clamping down all the bolts, its much easier this way i found. You might find that you cant tighten up one of the two bolts at the n/side end very easily(the one nearest the front of the car),i usually dont touch this one now(dont need to as the clamp down at the opposite end lifts this end up in tension),and just tighten its partner and leave the other one as far screwed in as it will allow. All will become clear when you do it

Rich,
Ours isn't bolted down but just wedged in. It needs some jiggling, just lift the o/s edge up and slide along the rad towards the n/s and angle it over the rad. It will come out just needs some coersion. Can't see how 1) you can change the filter or 2) get near the badge without removing the airbox. I could change the filter and the badge in about 20 minutes tops, and that includes replacing the box and shutting the bonnet.
No bonnet removal required - bloody golf club car owners.

I've undone the clamp on the off-side (single bolt) and so I was able to slide the box out from under the clamp on the nearside and of course remove the induction-pipe.

Thanks I'll give it a more determined try!

1) once I undid the clamps it was loose so I could ease it back enough to reach the 8mm nut holding on the badge.

2) Tim Lamont thinks I should be able to slide the new filter under the box and clamp it all back down to trap the filter tight to the box. Rich...
