Rough running, stalls and won’t restart.

Having fitted my alloy rad a few weeks back and had lots of running problems I thought it was cured with getting the air out of the system but went to use the car today and it was running very rough when first started, then once out driving seem to be over revving as I stopped at junctions, then the revs dropped to normal, but when I went to pull away it stalled and wouldn’t restart, after cranking the engine with no throttle it started to try and catch, then applied some throttle and it fired up, sounding like it was missing a lot, once revved it was fine. I headed home and it did it again at another junction, this time I had to push it to the side of the road, left it a few minutes as I checked the connections under the bonnet, seemed ok so tried to start it, again took lots of cranking, when I finally went there was a strong smell of petrol. It does also seem to be getting a bit hot. It’s a new engine, new plugs, TVR power had problems with it when it first fired up and they replaced the coil. I’m thinking maybe the stepper motor??? As the revs do seem to be doing strange things, are the stepper motors standard land rover parts as I have a specialist down the road from me who would probably have a new one it stock.

Spoke with the guy at the ranger rover place and they said to try and coolant sensor first as it might cause poor running and wrong fuelling if it’s misreading, and it’s a lot cheaper, didn’t seem to want to sell me the part, which makes a change. I’m thinking it might be a poor connection somewhere causing it though, spoke with TVR Power who said try cleaning up the connections to the air flow meter and other items.

Might get a Stepper motor anyway as it's revs are staying high for a long time after stopping. Also does anyone know where I can get a connector plug that goes onto the ignition module as want to redo the wiring to this as it's looking a bit dodgy, I replaced it a few years back with a spare I had laying about, noticed the rev counter was waving slightly so think it could be part of the problem, also the wires seem a bit tight, think it's moved since they rebuilt the engine.

Has you tried cleaning the stepper motor, and if so what was the result?

I did clean the stepper motor and the idle seems a bit more stable, seems to be dropping down to idle quicker too. I’ll give the car a run tomorrow, also going to fit the new coolant sensor I bought. Last week it did this though, running really rough then working again.

Driving is too a minimum at the moment B16 RFF as still suffering with the poor health but having the Griff back is good (when it's running right lol), hope things are good with you? I’ll drop you a mail mate.
