Help me with my Tyres Please

I am just trying to change the boots on the Griff, spent all last night reading all the threads about SO2's and Toyo's and SO3'2, Pirelli Pzeros etc and then started recording down tyre dealerships in the area from the threads, but my problem is.........

I have Bridgestone SO1's on all corners, 205/55/ZR15's on the front, but on the back.......235/50/ZR16's, Micheldever Tyres can only do SO3's on the front, but cannot do SO3's on the back as they don't do them this size, they would have to fit SO1's, they are not sure about the suitability of this mix,they are phoning Bridgestone to see if it is OK to mix them round......Help please!

i use a company in biggleswade beds, they can get so3 for you got them for my griff no probs and they are cheap. 01767 314011.

Sorry if this gets posted twice. Something wierd happened when I tried to submit first time.

Check the Bridgstone website for sizes of S03 www.bridgestone-eu.com/english/bs/range/tyrerange.htm and according to them they don't do S01 or S02 any more. I would also check what the factory recommended tyre size should be (in the bible no doubt). It maybe that a previous owner put the wrong ones on.

I don't know about mixing S01 and S03 but quite a few people (myself included) have mixed S02 and S03 with no problems.

i use 245 45 16 so3's on the back...so's all round
don't know about the mix.
main difference being stiffer sidewalls. can't see it making any difference, if your turn in is currently ok the mix should still be alright. so3's are just as grippy.

Thanks guys, looks like I might be able to get away with 245's at the back, reckon I ought to ring TVR tomorrow to ensure the clearance is OK.

As stated in the bible 245/45 16s were the standard fitted size for the last few years. My 98 Griff has had that from day 1. Fit 'em and wear them down!

Steve, really glad that you have replied, total respect to you and your devotion to the marque, I will go ahead and fit the 245's, but as for wearing them down.....
I am on the original set that came with the car when it was brand new, that was 7 years ago and have only done 23,000 miles in total, still Le Mans will give me another chance to enjoy the car a bit more.

Mine are still on the original SO1's also, They,ve done nearly 24k and i brought it at 21k so i hope that means it hasnt been thrashed,Track dayed too much before i got it(unless DG's swapped the wheels )Even though they might be getting some stick soon as i would like to do some track days and maybe some sprinting (Convincing myself i can afford it)

They are just about legal, but I have an MOT due this month and want to make sure that it goes through, however I had thought about taking it on a track a couple of times, but I don't want to risk getting pulled by the boys in blue.
Hey BB, noticed you are going to Le Mans, I haven't decided which way to go and have noted your crossing details as you aint that far away from me. The idea of driving the circuit on the Friday sounds good as not done that before as only ever managed to get ther on the Sat morning previously.

How can anyone get 23,000 miles out of rear tyres.... I have a 4.0 Chimaera and have done 6,000 on rear SO2s that are now illegal and very slippy in this weather.

Is this super high mileage achieved by : -

1. Confusing the break and accelerator pedals
2. Using diesel instead of Optimax
3. Car broke down 22,500 miles ago and it's been towed by an AA van ever since.
4. Running on snow chains throughout the year
5. The Rover V8 has been replaced with a Suzuki Baleno engine mod
6. A confusing assumption that the car was fitted with an auto gearbox
7. Is this one of the original very rare front wheel drive cars
8. It's a typo and you really meant 2,300

If it's none of the above, what on earth am I doing wrong. Mind you, the back tyre on my bike lasts between 2,000 and 4,000 miles and cost £156 !!


Sorry guys, I didn't realise I was in the Griffith forum...... now I understand how they last so long.

The rears on my Griff used to last about 20k each, quite easy to do it you are not doing track days. I certainly used the car as it was intended although managed to resist smoking the tyres from the lights etc, etc.

I am not the best person to talk about tyre wear... The 520 got through 22 of the Bridgestone's finest in 2001. Last year, rear tyres were lasting around about 1200 miles ish... I reckon anything over a few thousand is good.

I use 245 45 16 on the rear and I believe you can go up to 215 50 15 on the front if they're easier/cheaper to obtain.

If you struggle with obtaining Bridgestones I went to Eagle F1's on my first Griff and they were excellent. Got Toyo Proxes on the Rover Coupe and they seem to wear pretty quickly though they are exceptionally grippy...

sorry to invade the post but a garage has just told me that i shouldnt have falkens on my car and could void the insurance, now i dont belive this to be true but has anyone heard of this before???

He might be referring to the speed rating. It should be ZR. Any replacement tyre should be equivalent spec. That means VR or less are not suitable and this could put you into a very gray area as they are not equivalent replacements.

Illegal in Europe I understand and may be in the UK but it is not clear and probably needs a test case. Definitely not recommended though.

NOoooooooo Toyos are VR rated for 15 inch.
