slight knocking from engine

had a guy round to sort out battery problems and he noticed the engine gave off a slight knocking sound.
at first he thought it was bad then he gave it a blip and decided it wasn't that bad.
one of the exhausts has gone as i get a popping noise when i really blip it, could this be responsible for the knocking?
are griffs quite 'chuggy' in general when idling and at low revs? (awful expression i know)

If its really only a slight engine noise I think I'd ignore it for the time being. Theres no point in investigating too far, unless you're prepared to start spending lots of money.
If it's not the exhaust manifolds blowing, its probably going to be camshaft/lifter related, you're not going to do any harm by still driving it, as all of the parts will have to be replaced eventually anyway.
If you're unlucky and it turns out to be worse, like bottom end (unlikely) or cylinder liner(s) it'll probably be cheaper to source a new engine, rather than have the old one rebuilt, so again, no real problems carrying on using it for now.
Summer's coming, you've only just got the car, at least get a bit of quality use out of it, before you start pulling it to bits.

cool, thanks. was due to take it to automedon in blacky but have since found out that shane in stockport is a whole lot nearer to get it serviced. expecting a biggish bill (audi just charged me 500 squid 
) but that woukd be it for a while.

If it's that little ballbearing rolling around in the bottom of a pan sound at low blip from idle at, say, 900 - 1200 rpm, then it may be the cam follower noise that Ian reckons Bluey gives off. We've put it on mineral 10/40 for a while but it's no quieter.
Mind you, the main reason it's on mineral is cos of the oil consumption. Last 650 miles since change I have topped it up with almost 750 mls so far

Exactly the same noise as Miss Daisy gives off, plus I am going through a hell of a lot of oil but then again I do have a big leak as well.
Camshafts are shot on Miss D (68K miles on orginal cam so its due for a change) but seeing as I am having the engine out and to Power later on this year - gonna wait till then and put up with the loss of power in the mean time.
Get it to Ians and he will tell you exactly whats wrong with it, no big bills, straight to the point and will accept Wine Gums as a tip.
