I have a pre-cat griff that is fitted with a 500 exhaust system. However, I like the look of the short tail pipe extensions / trim fitted to the pre-cat cars, sad I know. The outside diameters of the 500 tail pipes are 20.3 cm or 8 inches.
My question is: are the diameters of the pre-cat tail pipes the same as a 500. If that is the case, I would just need to try and source some pre-cat pipe extensions, although perhaps easier said than done.
Would a pre-cat griff owner be kind enough to measure the diameter of their tail pipes just before the extension piece!

That's good of you; thanks very much. It looks as if the only difference between the pre-cat and the 500 exhaust tail pipes is that the 500 ends are chromed / polished, whereas the pre-cat relies on the chrome extensions for the bling. However, the pre-cat extensions do make the pipes look that litle bit bigger, which I like, (they have to be of a greated diameter to slide over the same diameter pipe as you have just confirmed) and they also bring the ends a little further away from the body work. It may help keep some of the soot of the back, then again maybe not
Does anyone know who might have a set of pre-cat tail pipe extensions for sale? I suppose that I could have some made up?
I will try Bellview and Douglas Valley on Tuesday.

Where are you measuring?
Mine is about 6.5" before the final larger bore end piece

Hi .... measuring just before the extension/end piece, i.e the pipe that the extension piece fits onto, your JP stainless system is not original so guess it must be a slightly different size?

I took mine off because they look like cosmetic add-ons - I thought they look really cheap and tacky! However I don't really want to sell them I'm afraid so I can refit them for 'originality'...sorry. Quite happy to supply you with measurements though if you like so you can get some made; they're not very complicated. If you fail to find some through the usual channels, all you really want is a 'chrome slash-cut' tailpipe trim. I'm sure Halfords or similar would have something suitable.

To be honest the reason why I would like a set is that I have the factory publicity BV Griff and having sourced a set of original five spoke AMIL wheels, the only differences externally, to the photos in the original sales brochures, is the oval side repeaters and the lack of exhaust trim. I have n't suddenly joined the Max Power crowd; just after originality - honest.

Hi factbv, I have the yellow 91 Motorshow Griff and have the extended tailpipes, its amazing how many people think they are add-ons, especially 500 owners. They do make the exhaust stick out noticeably more than a 500 and are an ar$e in the garage when you catch your ankle on them as you're walking round the back of the car. I have a set of the original side indicators spare in the garage somewhere that i took off my first pre-cat years ago, are you intending to change these back aswell? I think we chatted briefly at the Growl last year, good to hear you'ree getting the car how you want it.

Yes I would be very interested in the side indicators, I had intended to change them when I have the front end resprayed (some fiberglass work is required as the holes are now just a little too big). I managed to get two originals from Bellview but they were slightly different sizes. I understand that the originals are Fiat Tipo ones so I ordered a set from Fiat. When they arrived they were similar but about 4mm deeper than the originals, so if you have a set in good condition, I would be very happy to buy them from you, if they are for sale.

Hi Pete I must agree with tweeny that a lot of people think the tailpipe extensions are add ons,I recently had two sections made in stainless steel from the rear box.I did not want the look of the 500s so they made an exact copy of my setup so I have the PRE CAT look but in highly polished stainless steel (one peace).The chrome tailpipes slide over the sections I had made so I can maintain the original as factory look,however I leave them off at the moment.

Good to hear from you. Look forward to seeing your work on the exhaust.
Unfortunately, I won't be at Chatsworth but will be at the Growl, although I seem to recall from a previous thread that you can't make the Growl this year.
Incidentally, you have just cost me around £1200. After seeing your stunning pre-cat SS manifolds last year (automotive porn if ever there was such a thing) I have now had to buy a set myself! They're being fitted next week.
So obviously I have told Mrs factbv that this current round of completely unnecessary expenditure is your fault!! Seems to have worked!!
