Straight through pipes

just been out in the griff today for the first time since putting straight through pipes inside the silencer, an boy what a difference, the v8 now bubbles like it should, but isn`t loud enough to give a headache when cruising , marvellous!!

Did you do it yourself Clive? If so do you know what size pipe you used? I’d like to do mine but wanted to have the pipes ready so it’s not sitting around with no exhaust.

Just had mine done by a local exhaust specialist. He replaced the silencer box with two 'cherry bombs' and transfered the old silencer fixings so the rubber mounts and cover plate are still in place.

VERY pleased with the sound now!

PS: I can't remember the length and diameter of the straight thru' pipes that would need to be welded in to replace the box.

Hmm I did this using 55 mm stainless pipes then put the wadding back. However having the quad rear pipes this was far to NOISY, infact if you stood at the back of the car when I reved it your ear drums would perforate~ ask my mate.. It sounded like an F1 on full chat, but was quiet under little revs but as soon as you gave it the Lowd peddal all hell broke out

Now I like the look of that Exactly how far back do the quad pipes run ?

Are you going to the Growl this year ? As I am keen to have some work done on my '92 pre cat with 5 ltr

Something resonates down under at 2K revs. Previous owner has mucked about with the system but still unsure as to exactly what he's done.

Mine is definately louder than normal but how it compares to other mods I would like to know.

So those of you exhaust modders that don't mind showing off your steeds at the Growl, please come find me.

Anyone got a recommendation for an exhaust specialist on the South Coast, Hants or W Sussex who can do the cherry bombs/straight through conversion? Ballbark figure of the cost?

Hi FWD long time since we spoke, how's life treating you? oh and yeah I did have to drive it a little with the exhaust off just once, it wasn't that loud to be honest but the cat was still in place.

'Torque Techniques'(TT) have just replaced my silencer box for twin 'cherry bombs'
and I was very pleased with the workmanship and difference in sound (I have decided to keep my pre-cats in for the moment)
TT have been in business for 25 years and are well known in the trade.
They are located in Wilton on the Western side of Salisbury (easy walk to Wilton House or the Wilton Retail Outlet complex where you can while away your time) TT don't have their own website but they are metioned on a Salisbury Business site. I can give you exact directions and phone nos. if needed.

The work took around 5 hrs - 'car in, car out' and would have cost about £200 + VAT. The reason I am not absolutely sure on price is that I also had two polished stainless oval tailpipes fitted as well (Purely cosmetic, but I like them).

If this is of interest, I can take a photo tonight of the back of the car or the back end from underneath at the weekend.

Try Austec in Crawley/Gatwick they did a straight through on my Chim in december for £165.00 all in with leven steering wheel screws thrown in.

I used Austec to do my old Chim and paid about the same, was very pleased with the work and sound, plus there was no nasty resonance. I am going to use them again to do the Griff.

did the job myself, cut open the back of the silencer, 1mm thick cutting disc best for this so that you can put the same piece back when you`ve finished, remove all of the wadding, have some thin stainless or mild steel sheet approx 1mm thick, roll up to form a tube, the full length of the internal perforated pipes in the silencer,open the rolled tube to fit over the pipes, pull tight with jubilee clips to allow the formed plate to wrap around the pipes, then carefully weld them up.
then put the silencer back piece back on, position, tack, and weld up, hey presto, 4 hrs from start to finish, turn the key and GRIN!!
