ignition problem ?
Discussion
A friend of mine encounters following problems with his early Griffith 250 Bph. The engine runs too high, especially at low level when he is driving in the city. As a consequence, the cooling system is too much on demand. The fuel consumption is very high.
When he starts the car with the engine is cold, the normal rpm variations are more important than before. The sound from the exhausts is very too loud and we even suspect some gas turbulence from the exhausts. He has already replaced : distributor (delco head)sparks plugs - HT leads - stepper motor. It seems that the fuel pump is not faulty, as well as the lambda & oxygen sensors. The aiflow meter is OK. 9 months ago, the ignition coil was already replaced. The alternator Marelli (75 amps) was also replaced at that time and after some months, repaired (faulty diode). The TVR dealer has also changed the e-prom chip and replace it by an original one but there is no change. The next step is to try another electronic management system from another Griffith. There is no fault on the ECU reader ! so it is very difficult to identify the origin of these problems. The advance is to the minimum ....We think the problem occurs overall when driving in the city, at low rpm (1000 - 1500 - 2000 rpm). When the car has been checked by the dealer, we do not notice important idle problem. These problems seem to occur at low rpm. Except to change the ECU, have you any idea ? Many thks

My knowledge is very limited indeed, but I wonder:
Is the cam shaft standard one or have any other engine bits been changed?
Was the dealer who says it is ok the one from whome the car was bought?
Have all the basics been addressed? ie set idle correctly, air filter renewed, throttle settings inc cables, coil all checked?
Does engine speed change when at tickover and all the wires moved ie how does it do on the 'wiggle' test?
If all seems ok there, I'd go to another, independent, Rover V8 engine specialist, for a health check. All the best

The dealer is a TVR specialist for a long time. He as already tried and changed some parts without success and that's remain a mystery.
Each time, the problem seems to be solved but after somes miles of town driving, it reappears.
The engine speed changes slighly when at tickover. It is the standard cam shaft, no engine bits have been changed.
The stepper motor was replaced but the "old" one on an other Griffith is OK.
Since there is no fault in the ECU reader, it is very difficult to find the problem.
We will test other parts from an other Griffith but we progress blindly...
Many thanks for your help.
