Hi Vic, avoid the cleaners you put into the fuel tank, theese have very limited success. Professionally cleaned injectors such as the ASNU ultrasonically cleaners work very well, dribble, spray pattern, delivery rate and resistance checks before and after for comparison gives a very good indication of injector condition. If you would like them doing I may be able to help. drop me a line on my E mail. Regards dave

My Griff 500 has done nearly 40k and as far as I know the injectors have not been cleaned. I was thinking of trying the Wynn's or Redex product that you add to the fuel.
Not even worth a try then??

The trade rate 'Forte' - it's supposed to be trade only, but you can get it on ebay - make sure you get injector cleaner, not (plain old) gas treatment. It won't do the same job as ultrasonic cleaning, but then it's roughly 1% of the price...

I tried it, the car coughed and spluttered, then stalled. I assume therefore, some crap was shifted!

Griffter, I assume after it coughed etc you car ran ok? As you say the stuff is not expensive, do you think it is worth doing? Thanks.

How bad is the problem you have?
Personally speaking,i've used redex very successfully on a different car to the griff.I was getting valve stick,so i bought some and tried it in double the recommended dose and it stopped the stick very quickly. It must be worth a try to use Redex first rather than the expense of an ultrasonic clean, but i wouldn't expect it to perform miracles,or do the same job as an ultrsonic job.I think prevention is better than cure for things like this, its one of the reasons i prefer to use optimax, rather than cheaper fuels,i guess a shot of redex with a cheaper fuel would be just as goog though.
For the price of a bottle or redex i think id be giving it some of this, until youve used it all, then re-revaluate the situation.

Hi Mike,
I don't have a problem my car runs fine. I use Optimax too. Like you I was thinking prevention rather than cure and looking for feedback on a product that will clean or help to keep clean the injectors etc.

I've just put a bottle of 'De-tox' through my Griff ..... didn't have any problems but thought it couldn't do any harm.

It doesn't seem to have made any difference but then I wasn't expecting to notice anything ..... just using it as a precaution as it were! I have used Optimax at every opportunity since getting the Griff for the same reason.

The old saying that it it isn't broke, then dont fix it applies here then.In all the cars i've owned, which includes many high milers,i've never had,or felt the need for an injector clean,so to me its something that rarely needs doing.I'm as fussy about changing my fuel filter as i am my oil filter, and that must help surely?Don't get paranoid about things like injectors needing cleaning,-until you notice a problem,do you really have a problem?
I think a shot of Redex every now and then certainly wont hurt,if it makes you feel better though, personally i just stick to good fuel

The problem was most likely that contrary to the instructions I put it in a near empty tank, as I'd heard that Jag dealers used to run it through neat for a really good clean. I drove straight to the petrol station, brimmed the tank and it ran fine. Can't say I noticed any difference - but then it was a preventative thing really, given all the noises people make about dirty injectors, I figured at 14 years and 57000 miles it couldn't hurt.

I stuck some Wynns injector cleaner in the tank when I fiiled up the price of Optimax has gone through the roof in the SE. Did a good hour long run and I am pretty sure that the engine feels a bit smoother especialy at low revs. Then again I could be wrong I had the top off, its a bute day and there are a lot of woman around with their tops on! but not much more

Are the plugs black on just a couple of cylinders or on one side of the v8 bank? If in injector is stuck, it will not tick as the internal piston moves up and down, so have a good listen. There is no injector light as such, just a MIL light to show the ECU has found a fault, BUT its not enabled in the ECU firmware on a lot of cars and may never light. As for cleaning we are trying to see if a cheap jewelry ultrasonic cleaner will work and the injectors are being pulsed open / close at 50 HZ using a 12 volt transformer and half wave rectifier. Dont know if this works yet though.

Keep fuel injector clean by using fuel injector cleaners isnt a bad choice at all. I have been using them for years. Try Chevron, Lucas or BK44 to see different between before and after.

You can read more here about various types of fuel injector cleaners:

Good luck
