my griff is sick

shane at SFR has yet to fully diagnose the problem but he agrees that it is making one hell of a racket (of the not good variety) !
i'm hoping that it is merely an exhaust manifold crack/leak that is creating the tapping noise but shane hasn't discounted camshaft problems.
has anyone experience with camshaft problems? how did it go, how much was it to repair? all advice/sympathy welcome

Hi
i have had 2 cams in 25K miles..1st at the hands of team proactive that went bump...both cost around £600-700.
now using a piper cam & had the oil pump replaced at the same time. Steve Gugliemi spotted it as maybe causing the low oil pressure & early cam damage.
runs a bit lumpy at idle, but is fine, but picks up quicker than the kent one.

I'll let you know. Mines booked in at SFR next Monday for cam/followers etc replacing! Think he said about 800+vat, but I'm having other bits done on top of that, service, diff bush etc. Then I'll be selling it

You could try a method for eliminating the Manifolds that I found useful.
Take a short length of hosepipe, put one end to your ear and pass the other over the manifolds - especially the section where the four pipes go into one.
The ticking will increase noticably when it passes over a hole - even if you can't see the hole itself.
Could save a lot of money

thanks, i would try that except its in the garage now. i'd rather shane had a real good look at it as i'd rather not have to go back for more ticking sounds in a month etc. unfortunately my budget wont extend to a service as well

cool. mine's been in for a week and nothing has been done on it, shane has a big backlog of cars becuase he is finding parts hard to find at the moment (not helped by TVR's crisis) talk about exactly the wrong time to buy a buggered old griff! lol all part of the fun i suppose
ps how do you know the cam needs changing? are you a mechanic yourself? i just knew my car didnt sound too healthy - the extent of my knowledge before i read the bible. how comes you're selling it? how long have you had the car?

I'm up for a new cam etc and I hope its not that much...! otherwise my plans for a trip to Mexico are out the window.

Not a mechanic, but I know it's not the manifolds (already had that once). Been noisy for a while but have just lived with it until now, but selling it so needs to be right. Took it to Shane's a few weeks ago and he confirmed it was "tappety", so it's either cam, tappets, followers etc. But since you'd never replace just a subset it'll all get done anyhow, regardless if what's actually worn.

My understanding is that it can be cheaper if you "just" change the cam, ie ignore the followers tappets etc. However this is shortsighted as you'll need to replace the rest soon anyway. And given it's a lot of labour (loads of anciliaries etc to remove) it makes sense to do it all at once.
