Just spent the day replacing my rad, and sorting out the unbelievably bad earth and wiring situation in that area.

After tracing some wires back I noticed a bunch of wire cable tied together, that wasn't connected to anything at one end, and dissapeared into the hatch where the windscreen bottle sits. Being curious, I took the hatch off, and lo and behold there's a big black cylinder sitting just behind the drivers side headlight. It's got two pipes connecting to the top which disapear either side of the engine, and this wire plugging into the top.

So, anyone have any ideas what this is??? If it's some kind of pump, then whatever activated it before doesn't anymore as the wire doesn't go anywhere. Not planning on removing it, just curious....

Also found another couple of plugs un-connected, a 6 pin plub and a pair of single wire connections, aren't TVR's wonderful...

I think its a filter of sorts for petrol fumes, I guess from the tank, but I am sure someone will explain it properly soon, cheers, John

Purge Cannister

Cheers, guess I'll be leaving it well alone then!

Edited cos I've now had a quick search into this.....

It appears that the solenoid for my purge cannister isn't connected (wires have been cut at some stage...). I have two wires in the same area with plugs on the end that are currently un-plugged, the wires are the same colour as those on the solenoid, could this be where I need to connect it to? I'm wondering whether this could be the cause of a fuel smell I get after a bit of run, as the solenoid isn't kicking in? It does seem strange though that the wires were cut, so not sure how long this has gone un-used....

The more I work on my car, the less I understand it......

Just another quick thought, could this be one of the causes of the hesitation under light throttle, the fact the purge can' isn't activating? Sorry if this sounds silly, I'm not that technically minded but saw a few mentions of it in other threads so thought it might be worth a try

I'm no expert here but would think it's unlikely.

It could be - the valve should open occasionally to equalise the pressure in the fuel tank. This could be causing the problem - its easy to check though just loosen your fuel filler cap and see if you still have the problem. If so then it's not the valve.....

Ok, I'll try that tomorrow, cheers

Incidentally, does anyone happen to know where the wire's should connect to? I've looked through the bible but the wiring diagram doesn't show the purge can'. I'm fairly sure it's the two wires I've got nearby, but don't want to just connect them up in blind hope...

Fair enough, like you I'm going through every possible thing trying to find the cause of this hesitation, glad you got yours sorted though, very jealous!

The wiring hotwire diagram is here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=66&t=243015

The purge canister is item 26 in the bottom left. Of the two wires, one will be earthed via the ECU (the grey wire with a yellow tracer) and the other gets a 12v feed from the fuel pump relay. This will have power for the first 10seconds or so after you turn the ignition on, and switch off once the fuel pump primes.

Never quite figured out what the canister does but hey ho.

Nice on Iain, that's certainly made my life easier! Those colours match up with the two plugs I have in the same area, so I guess it's a case of connect them up and see what happens....
