Glove compartment stuck closed

My glove compartment popped open all by itself whilst driving along,unfortunately at the time my teenage son was in the passenger seat.And before I got to say anything to him he slammed it shut in a annoyed teenager type way,and now it will not open.Has anybody had this problem before(not the annoyed teenager problem)as I am wondering how to go about trying to open it without damage to the leather etc. any suggestions?

I had the problem of the glove box regularly opening when going over a bump. I used valcro and superglue! It's fine now.

Is giving the glove compartment a GOOD THUMP really the only solution

Be afraid, be very afraid! Bizarrely, I had a problem with the blower for the heater and opening and closing the glove fixed it! Was driving down the motorway, blower stopped a quick open and close and 'blluuuhh....' - car stopped. Took it to Fernies (courtesy of RAC) and it transpires a switch which activates the fuel pump is behind glove box and doesn't like being banged!

New catches cost about 90p from B&Q - look for wardrobe catches. Secret to the Griff glovebox is NOT to slam it/hit it etc, but just a gentle firm push to engage the catch.
