Automatic TVR

Hi. I am disabled and can only drive an autocar. I would like to get someone to adapt a Griff, ideally with a ZF 4 speed auto. Can or has this been done? help and advice please. Make my dream come true. I live near Bristol and may have a mechanic who could take on the challenge.

I personally don't think Griff suits fully auto. The idling is often erratic. I reckon this coupled with atuo could lead to problems. (e.g. motor unexpectedly revs at 2,500 whilst in drive)

yep have heard about a couple about, maybe a chimeara but deffiantly do able. try a search in here the chimp forum and general tvr gassing as i am sure it has been brought up before.

You could use the GM 180? auto as found on some sd1's. A friend of mine converted his TR8 4.0 to auto and loved it! It wasn't a slouch either, plus those boxes cost next to nothing.

thanks for your help guys. my friend was thinking of using a box from a range rover but I would need to buy a griff first. don't want to make an expensive mistake!

I see no reason why a range rover box could not be used, as long as it fits and can handle the torque. Should go straight onto the Rover V8.

Without having read the other threads, my gut feeling would be that it is technically possible - after all, the Range Rover used the same basic engine once and it had an auto, but it all depends on whether the auto gearbox would physically fit into the backbone chassis of the Chimaera or Griffith.
I know that when jellison was fitting the Corvette engine and gearbox into his Chimaera he had some serious problems getting the gearbox to fit.

They guy in Sprint was my dad, he posts here sometimes under the name of Plenumpete, drop him a line, i'm sure he'd be more than happy to talk through what is involved. He has just bought a new Griff after selling his other one a few years ago, and is soon to get it hand controlled, and gearbox sorted (its all very complicated, but basically it makes the stock gearbox a semi automatic, no clutch control required).

Does the conversion mean that the gear lever still has to be moved manually though?
Im interested in auto TVR's too and have a 350i auto at the moment.

in that respect yes it does have to be moved manually, the system basically replaces the need to press the clutch by placing a switch in the gear knob that activates it. Honestly drop my dad a line, i'm sure he'd be more than happy to talk about how it works. I can't explain it properly and do the system justice.
