shocks question

I have Avos front and rear and poly bushes all round on my pre cat; My rear shocks are on their way out as they were knocking and my indie have confirmed they are past their best. The fronts are fine and so I was planning on only changing the rears...either gaz or possibly Nitrons. My indie said that was fine to do just the fronts but thought I would post the question on here too....

For the price of a pair of Nirtons, you could pretty much get a full set of Gaz (or other leading brand )

Whatever you do, it's really quite important that you treat them as a set. Worn out dampers which (let's be honest) were nothing to write home about when they were new, are going to have completely different characteristics to spangly new silky smooth Nitrons at the other end, even assuming you know the spring rates and keep them the same. You won't get the benefit of the Nitrons, and god only know how it'd handle.

thanks for the replies guys...looks like I'm better off waiting a bit and getting them all done. Whats the price difference for a pair of Gaz compared to Nitrons then?

£270 for a half Gaz kit v £558 for a half Nitron kit

Nitrons are approximately double the price of the Gaz.

I only use the car on the road so I can't see Nitrons as justifiable for me really....the other option I see people put in the frame is Protech. And then the other important factor is presumably down to having the car properly set up afterwards. Also I only had the Avos put on two years ago, approx 20,000 miles of use, so was quite disapointed that they didn't last longer. Are Gaz and Protech any better for durability/longevity?

Can...worms...open.

At the end of the day, both Gaz and Protech come with 3 year warrenties...and you can be pretty sure in the current competitive environment both will be honoured if there is even a hint of a problem.

After a couple of years the dampers should still be working OK but would probably benefit from a service. This would apply to most/all of the common aftermarket dampers (although the very cheap ones may not be serviceable and need to be treated as disposable).

If you've been happy with the performance of the AVO's (and I've found them perfectly adequate for the road-based driving I do) then I've heard that Avo do rebuild service on their shocks. Don't know how much it costs but give the factory a ring.
