brake calipers and 300 x 28mm Discs fit under 15's I understand anything over 290 maybe needs alot of fettling.

Yes and no. It does on some and not on others. If the wheel is slightly out of shape then no. If the offset is in the wrong place... it won't. In other words it is a hand fettle situation.

I have AP 4 pot calipers with 304mm discs fitted with the standard 15" wheels. No problems at all,just great stopping power!

I ran 304mm discs with 4-pot Wilwood superlites in 15" rims for a while, and it was an *extremely* tight fit which required very careful positioning of the calipers to clear everything. It only took the tiniest amount of flex in the bearings to cause problems. I suggest you consider a maximum of 285mm on the front, for several reasons: there's no problem with clearance; it gives dramatically better heat dissipation than standard; if you go any further than this you will mess up the brake balance unless you also change the rear brakes.
