Starter solenoid 12V connection

I tried to remove the 12V connections from the threaded post on my starter motor solenoid, but found that when turning the nut (on the threaded stud) that the stud turned with it. I only moved it a fraction for fear of breaking something internally in the solenoid. Anyone know how the stud is fixed in the solenoid and whether it's likely to break?
