Well it had to happen eventually I suppose...been telling too many people how I've got a good un that never lets me down...started fine early this morning, drove to a meeting - about 25 miles, - came out two hours later - engine fairly cool - wouldn't start.

Wouldnt crank, fuel pump running so immobiliser off, no dimming of the lights or low voltage when turning the key. Voltage OK at about 13V.

New Battery & starter motor in April, hot start kit already fitted (engine was pretty cool anyway)

Didn't have much of a tool kit in the car so phoned the AA, 1.5 hours later they arrive, a further 1 hour later he can't find the problem. There is voltage at the Starter on the 'thick' HT lead but not on the 'thin' ignition lead (please excuse my technical terms)
There is vlotage at the ignition key switch, and the switch is OK. No obvious fuses blown including the 100 amp job.

Bump started her and got home, I have searched the bible and couldnt really narrow it down from that. I have checked connections etc but to no avail. Has anyone any ideas where to start looking for a loose connection, fuse that may have gone that I havn't found or a hidden relay or something? She's a 1997 500.

Help please!

The Hot Start kit you have has a relay in it I would check that as that feeds the small wire from the ignition You are on about that has no Voltage? Prehaps some of the connections for the hot start kit have come loose?

Thanks for the thoughts, that fuse is OK and the wiring for the hot start kit seems OK. As I fitted it myself it was one of the first things I checked - just had another look (confidence slowly seeping away.....)I'll test the relay tomorrow.. its like an oven in the garage today ....TIME FOR A BEER Back at it in the morning.

Keep racking your brains gents..

Since you've already got the hot start kit, you've got everything you need. If you have a switched feed in to the hot start relay then you know the ignition switch, immobiliser, wiring, connectors etc are all sound and the roblem is within the hot start relay or the wire down to the solenoid. If you *don't* have power on the switched feed in then one or more of those things I listed is faulty. In that case the first thing I'd check would be the connector plug between the ignition switch and the main loom, since these are notoriously unreliable.

David,

Thank you for your help on the phone. You were right It looks like the immobiliser is the problem: I think I'll get a pro to fit a replacement - hopefully one that includes a boot release as well.We have a good local auto electrician so Ill see what he can suggest & how much its going to cost .

Thanks again.

Mike.
