Petrol in Boot!!

Griffith 4.0 Pre-Cat
Petrol fumes & residue in boot after filling. Does anybody know where the black rubber vent pipe exits the car! Ive followed its route from the filler neck down the rear valance behind the petrol tank --then loose it!! This could be the cause of the petrol smell. Anybody know if the petrol tank filler cap should be vented!!

It could do but the vent hose should vent outside the car mine exits the boot space near the top rear passenger side (nearside I think ) suspension mount. however in between there is a roll over cut off valve which stops the vent pipe from leaking fuel should you happen to drive upside down through a tunnel... or something similar..

It could be around there somewhere but before you start un-strapping the fuel tank, just make sure it not the cap especially if there's a vents hole in it..

I have a 4ltr Pre-Cat and mine is the same,just after fill up strong fumes odour for about a minute then everything is ok.I wouldn't worry too much,just another little TVR quirk

Hi Nick this not just fumes, its petrol aswell?

No vent hole in the petrol cap! Cannot find anything about the vent pipe in the "bible"
I wonder if Steve H has any thoughts on this problem!

On my 1992 4.3 the vent pipe used to spray petrol next to and on the nearside exhaust pipe. When I acquired the car it poured out here when the tank was filled. I've put a restrictor in the pipe so that gas (not US for petrol in this context) can flow but petrol should not. Been OK so far. Under the car, if you look up above the pipe you should see a rubber pipe sticking out of the floor.

surely not Pre-cat info missing from the Bible that can't be true

If it not just fumes then where is the trim damp? another thing to remember is that the tank sender unit is in a different place that the later ones. but unless its always leaking then I suspect it is the vent pipe / rollover valve that's leaking a bit when you fill up.. I agree with Griffoz you should see an open end of fuel pipe from under the car. If not and all you see is a hole somewhere in the GRP moulding it could be the pipe has pulled inside the car.

if you pull the carpet away from around the filler neck then you can follow the vent pipe down behind the tank.. good luck hopefully there'll be none of this

Pulled carpet away, found pipe as above-but this pipe goes down to the floor of the boot behind the tank exits the rear valance and continues on into the fuel pump?

There also a pipe on the right hand side of the rear of the petrol tank about 50mm from the top - this does exactly as the left hand side , going down to the bottom rear valance exiting & connecting to a metal fuel pipe? NONE of these two pipes are the vent pipes!!!
IM really confused.
PS No hole in filler cap!!

Still a strong smell of petrol in boot, but no petrol at present-maybe only fill the tank 3/4 full. & see if I still get petrol in boot!! sorry for all the but its a pain in the a**se.
