Front number plate mounting

I've yet to remove my existing front plate, but have bought a new 3/4 size plate to improve the airflow. On holding it against the original, it fits inside of the two existing screw mounts!
Can I create new holes in the GRP or is this a bad idea - how have you guys with smaller plates mounted them?

just glue it in place, double sided carpet tape, or one of the many adhesives on sale!

Hmmm, I would trust tape / glue for the rear plate, but I'm not sure on the front - have you do yours this way?

You can by some strong bond tape stuff that will do it that you can try. I have some at home which I can bring some to the Growl if you are going and you want to try it.

Hi Slacey,

Yes you can just drill a couple of new holes and fill the old ones. I use mine for hillclimbing and have put 3M extra strong velcro on the plate and the 'strut' to hold it on so I can remove it for the hillclimb events. I have had it like this for over a year now and have done well over a 100 on the motorway and it never budges. I find the velcro stronger than the double sided tape!
I have even cunningly superglued a couple of screw caps (you know the black caps to conceal the number plate screws) on to the plate so it looks like its screwed on!!!!

My number plates are now screwed on. Just pilot drill the mounting bar and use the self tapping screws. Insure the pilot hole is the same diameter of the screws core diameter, then you are not stressing the fibreglass at all.

I am still waiting for the V5 to come through so that I can effect the reg transfer for my new plate, hopefully I can get it sorted for the Growl and have a go at fitting it there

Been using a velcro strip for 12 months with a 3/4 plate with no probs

My 'plate is on with velcro too. Nice and easy to remove on track days etc.

Not wishing to hijack the thread, but how is everyones rear number plates attached?
Mine has some pretty strong sticky tape of some kind. but twice now on really hot days I've returned to the car to find its fallen off.

The rear on mine is easy - it's screwed on with self tappers at the very ends of the plate.

I changed to 3/4 size and the new plate covered the old holes. It was the original front plate too!

Great news is though it knocked some 5 degrees off the running temp at speed

My 3/4 size plate is attached with velcro because I hate number plate screws.
Uses 2 bits each about 4in long and 2cm wide, prickly side on the car so the plate bit doesn't pick up rubbish or inadvertently attach itself to anything when its off the car. It does the job a treat and comes off easy for washing both it and the car (makes it nice and easy to scrape off bugs) and getting access to the driving lamps.

Looks like I can save the day

Some 3M Dual Lock just so happens to be resting in my stores from an ex-clients contract. I did have 1" and 2" widths in said 50 mtr rolls. Best used with a liquid promoter you have to brush on, and believe me if it's done properly you won't get it off, but can be used without with mixed results

I can bring some to the Growl if the need arises, or could post some off if you e-mail me your requirements. I'll do my best to help, and will check the stock situation tomorrow on the condition you don't tell my ex-client. I will not be able to post any promoter but will bring some to Ettington if needed

In my case I wanted to keep the holes incase I decide at a later date to put the old plate back.

So a trip to the local DIY centre and have used bathroom mirror screws with plated screw-on caps (brass plated for mine as badges are gold coloured)
