oil pressure up and down

Tried searching topics on this but not sure they answer my question.

Oil pressure gauge has always shown quite healthy reading. Still shows 30-35 on start up and idle, and will stay around that mark until go over about 2500rpm. Then starts to drop very quickly, and can go right off scale as though turned off. But picks up again if back off the revs.

Oil is just below max on dipstick. Warning light comes on and goes off when start ignition, but does not come on when pressure gauge drops.

Can anyone suggest what might be going on??

Almost certainly the sender.I've heard of this a fair bit recently,and witnessed the same symtoms on a friends car.

As mongoose said, although in my case it was just the wire connection to the sender unit that was corroded and loose.

I've had the same problem just give the wire and sender a clean.

Yep - same here.

The reading would drop off the scale & scare the life out of me, but a quick clean & all is well again.

Thanks guys, will give that a try. Had a quick look and the contact and wire certainly don't have much covering them so hopefully a good clean is all thats needed.
