Well annoyed am I.

Since bought this Griff, I have NEVER dicsonnected the alternator wiring - until I had to remove the alt to be tested / repaired. Had probs - see battery discharge thread - got it back tonight and reconnected exactly same as when took off BUT, after initially thinking all was well, I noticed the outside is getting hot again as the other day, when it was the rectifier that had fried they said. But I have suspicions it was always wired wrongly.

It has two thick brown wires coming at it, from the loom or whatever you call it, and they were BOTH together on one post (presume it's the positive post) at around 3 o clock as you look at the back; and I have replaced them in the same place. But there is another such post, at 12 o clock relative to this, with NO wires on it. The two smaller wires, brown/white at 6 and black, 11 o clock, respectively, are back where they came from too.

Should one of those brown ones be on the other thiker post?!

Can anybody please give me a link to any photo of the back of an alternator on 94 Griff 500 (Magnetti Marelli). It is getting hot on the casing again and I suspect I will be charged another £70 which I cant afford till two weeks time. You know the rest ..... Cheers folks

the 2 browns are to B+ If you connected them wrong it would make a heavy spark when trying to connect!
Stick a multimetre on the battery and make sure its charging between 13v and 14v

Lee - Thanks for that reassurance.... are these on the correct post? Just nipped out and took as it is:

www.tvr-car-club.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2443

That's the way it was wired before I took it to AER for repair so it's gone back that way tonight. Is charging higher on the dash gauge now than before repair (when my mate had registered it on his hand held meter as 13.1+ something, so I reckon it's doing at least that now since repair).

BTW the snapp connector has been left only partly on so as to identify it in the pic: prior to repair, this connection just could not be made as the terminal had the connection pointing away so the short black wire could not reach; hence my never reattaching it myself since car was bought; the AER guys have just turned the connection round to enable it to reach. Otherwise, it is as it was prior to repair.

Just cant fathom why it's getting so hot again.

I prosume you mean the alternator gets hot when engine is cold! if so it sounds like the stator in the alternator is permanently polarised (which means the battery will be flat in the morning)! That means take it back!
But if you mean whilst the engine is running, but eventually cools down theres nothing to worry about ( it could just be the bearings producing heat thru the body of the alternator!

Now then, AER said he'd changed the "stator plate", bearings and rectifier. It DID get hot when I was charging the battery over the weekend, but is not doing it now unless the engine is running, which I also took to be a dodgy sign. The increased noise it was giving out I took to be due to the new bearings.

So, having dicsonnected the battery for the night, I will leave till tomorrow after work and see how it runs when reconnected. And will give the guya ring and take it down for a check over on friday when I get a day off....

Did that pic look ok, man?

Personally i would keep the battery connected overnight! if the battery is flat in the morning, then you know the alternator is getting warm and draining the battery (faulty)
If it starts ok but produces loads of heat and whines, then the bearings are probably faulty! just make sure the belts not too tight!
And i couldnt get the pic because i havnt registerd yet!
let me know how you go on

Cheers, Lee. Just connected up now & will check after work. Will take it to AER again tomorrow running on car so they can sort out that ? bearing racket either way.

No heat all day while connected to battery in garage. Guy at AER reckons there should be no noise from nearings and no I told him it aint overtight on the belt. Will get tested on the morrow.

It was fine. AER chap was surprised as to how hot the alt got after a few miles driving. Not hot before starting though and no noise from the alt.
