225/50 15 FRONT TYRES

I am looking for a pair of tyres to replace my Bridgestone Potenza S-02 PPs.

My Griffith 500 has PAS, so they need to be 225/50 15, at least 'W'-rated.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Where's the cheapest place to purchase by mail order (supply only)?

I had Toyo Proxys fitted to the front of my Griff 500 last year by Peninsula for £160 for the pair (but I don't have power steering so they wer 205's). Excellent grip and turn in though....

W Rated? Are we not into the old 'fit as standard' argument again?

I was under the impression that most insurers will insist on Z rated tyres fitted, even though most of us aren't driving around over 156mph!

I'm insured with Classicline and put this question to them, they came back with Z rated - as were fitted originally.

I have a non PAS car and the only option from most dealers are the Dunlop SP9000 (which are a reasonable £65 from www.blackcircles.com).

I don't personally like the idea of mixing tyre brands (I have T1-R's on the back). But I would say that as long as you're not mixing brands on the same 'axle' you should be okay.

I would check with your insurer, the last thing you want after a 'ding' is some pen pusher eyeing up your tyres and tutting under his breath.

There is no reason to buy the higher rated tyres - but get confirmation from your ins co first. If they say Z rated - ask why - they have probably not thought about the answer! They may confirm W rated OK!

My insurer last year (Elephant) said as long as road legal they did not care what rating.

DOT don't care as long as OK for all UK roads...ie 70mph!

Maybe, maybe not but who cares about the DoT?
The BiB care and for the car to be road legal the tyres "have to be suitable for the car and the use to which it is being put."

Yes, but are the BiB more concerned with the 140 MPH you are doing on a public road, or the fact your tyres are ONLY rated for 149MPH???. I spoke to BiB when this tyre issue first came up and they said as long as it met wirh road traffic use, they are OK. Road traffic use is anything suitable for 70mph.

If you drive in Germany, (or if you drive in the UK at 150+ for safty reasons) go with a Z rated tyre. Your choice though...but I know which way I will go.
