Hi, I have a problem with my Griff (which I use daily and in all weathers) whereby it keeps burning through HT Leads. Not so long since I bought a new set of 8mm Magnecor Leads, and Number 7 lasted about 2 weeks before it burnt through and started arcing. Is this a common problem, and if so, are they typically covered in something nearby the manifold ?

I noticed the Magnecor have an 8.5mm lead which has extra heat resistence. Would this do the trick ?

Thanks.

The leads shouldn't connect straight to the plugs. There should be an angled metal shrouded extender to move the HT lead away from the manifold. Also, heat wrapping the manifold can help - although it can create problems of its own, particularly for a car left wet.

Thanks Griffter. The use of angled extenders makes sense, but this is the first I have heard of them. All the leads I have bought, including the the Magnecor set specifically for the TVR Griff/Chimp, have had a straight extended Cap for direct attachment to the spark plug, thus crossing the manifold very closely. Please can you advise me on these angled extenders (are they standard Rover SDI...?) I presume this would change the required HT Lead Cap ie. not the extended Cap as mentioned above.

Thanks again, Andy.

No worries. As per seasider's pic. They're originally a Vauxhall part (and these have a high internal resistance) but ACT sell non-resitive - all the better for Magnecors. They go between the spark plug and lead - the leads you have should be fine. The connector on the non-spark plug end is like a spark plug nipple, so the leads pop straight on (and sometimes off again - check regularly).

Thanks Griffter and Seasider. I've been in touch with ACT. Hopefully with these extenders and a new set of leads (to be on the safe side)it will be like a new car. No more misfiring down Blackpool Promenade.
