Help, I've got a stiff....... pedal

I know, I know another question, but is it normal for the accelerator cable to be very stiff?

the pedal on my car has a lot of resistance at the top of the travel, and requires almost as most effort as the clutch! Is this normal or can you adjust it at all as it is making jerk free starts very difficult.

is it still stiff if the cable is disconnected?
if not then check that the cable isn`t frayed, and that it is routed properly to the throttle likage, if it is then you`ll have to crawl down there and investigate, shouldn`t be to difficult though.

No, it isn't normal. Do you feel the same sort of force when the pedal is coming back up, or is there a lot of stiction in the system?

Is 'Stiction' a technical term for the problem?

No the pedal returns to top position fully with no noticable resistance or help needed from me. As the car is new to me it is hard to say if it returns to top as quick as it should, but I am not noticing a problem in that respect.

Do I disconnect the throttle cable from the pedal or from the throttle linkage on the engine to test it?

a bit fiddly, but I`d disconnect from the pedal first, that way you will know if its the pedal or the cable.

Has been a controversial in the past but, Standard set-up is to have two throttle return springs, its quite common to remove one of these to make the throttle feel much lighter and the car go much faster . The dealer did mine when I mentioned this post test drive.

That sounds like a simple solution, I will have a look tonight and see, I did notice that the spring was pretty big, and seemed quite long, but then I guess that is something to do with the length of travel in the pedal.

Simon, You are a genius. What a difference! I have removed one of the springs aand lubricated up the throttle linkage and it is so much easier to drive, not to mention an awful lot smoother at low speads. Excellent piece of advice, thanks!
