driving back from Donnington sunday evening and noticed that when cruising along with the throttle down just enough to maintain cruising speed so engine is not doing any hard work, it feels a bit hesitant, almost as if its surging every second, as if the brakes were being touched very lightly every second, these things are so bl**dy difficult to put into words!!
Tickover is fine, response is fine, it only happens when cruising with little throttle, car is 96 500 griff recent new coil, cleaned plugs.
wondering could this be a slight fuel starvation problem, fuel filter need replacing, or dirty injectors, or even filled with some dodgy fuel?
any ideads folks?

I Had something like that but mine was down to either a loose plug lead, fit of dizzy cap or dirty rotor arm, or connection at the coil. Dont know which cause I pushed them all harder but if I was a betting man I think it was the dizzy/rotor.
I know i am one of the less experienced owners but I would check these first.

Sounds very plausible. Could be the first signs of one of the plug shroud things breaking down too.
Check are the exhaust manifold bolts as well (I seem to remember you recently did this, so they should be OK) as the resulting leak can cause a lambda sensors to tell lies.
I have spare parts should you want to swap things out to test.
