A big black cylindrical object with two hose pipes attached, and located (or rather rattling about) in the compartment below the right hand main headlight. One hose goes to the plenum chamber and the other disappears down the chassis on the other side. I’m curious to know what it is before I start pulling the car to pieces to find out how to reattach it…

The carbon cannister will be somewhere round there, it'll have a vent tube in from the fuel tank and an outlet to the plenum. There should be a solenoid valve between the cannister and the plenum. The idea of the carbon cannister is that with the car parked, the fuel tank vents through it and the carbon absorbs polluting hydrocarbons that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. When the engine is running, the solenoid valve opens allowing the engine to suck air back through the cannister, bringing the hydrocarbons with it. You have to wonder whether the pollution saving the carbon cannister gives is worth the cost and pollution that came from making it though!

Otherwise known as the Carbon Cannister/purge Tank
Filled with charcoal that absorbs the petrol fumes escapimg to the atmosphere as the air vent at the filler cap on the Petrol Tank isnt used.
As quoted from the Bible 'It is occasionally needs replacing to ensure correct emission readings are met,but is generally left alone and forgotten'
Hope u dont mind me quoting that Mr S Heath.

Edited to say i think Pete got in there with a better explanation.
