Electric power steering pump?
Discussion
Has anyone thought about this?
I think the current pump has got very tired, and rather than replace like-for-like I wondered about making some space for the supercharger I'm not allowed to have
Going electric should also tidy up the pipe runs around the exhaust (remember I have a relocated PAS reservoir) provided it is small enough to fit where the reservoir currently is...
Failing this, does anyone know where I can get a recon pump or the parts do do so and a reservoir I can fit JIC (or similar) fittings to so I can tidy up all the nasty pipes with braided hose?
Thanks!

Already done it, used a pump from a Peugeot/Saxo. Got if off Ebay, re-conned from BBA Reman. If you've already got PAS though, I would think it would be cheaper just to re-con or replace your standard pump, as you'll additional costs for hoses, wiring etc. as well as the extra effort.

I had a similar problem, as the pump had a very small leak from the casing itself where it joins the ally. Look for a second hand one from a Range Rover, have it check for leaks first. The job is a little messy and a bit tight in places, but nothing difficult.I took my pump off last week to check the leak etc, also while you are doing it it is worth while to check all belts and pipe work. Good luck. Mad Nad
Now thinking about whether speed sensitivity is a desireable feature of PAS.
Nic would like the car to feel light for things like parking & sitting in traffic, but doesn't want it to feel any different than it does now when moving quickly...
Electric should give me this option - not so sure about mechanical.

Wixer, was this a big job ? Maybe you, Steve Heath or similar would like to make an after market PAS kit ... what do you think ? Be great to see a summary of the key steps.
you don't need a kit, i've done loads of these conversions on cerbera, chimaera and grifith. just use all the std tvr stuff, the pipework even has the same fittings as the saxo pump so there's nothing you need other than all the pas stuff from a donor car and a saxo pump. all you then do is wire a big relay to power the pas pump up! job done.

This sounds like a Haynes Manual quote !!
I'd say it's a bit more tricky than this. Positioning the pump, making brackets, hose lengths, how to power the unit etc. I know the later model TVR's use an almost identical pump to a Saxo/106 but I doubt the mounting brackets would fit all older model TVR's. I've fitted this setup to my Griff, and positioned the pump in a very similar position to a T350, Tamora, Sagaris, i.e. suspended from the front upper chassis crossmember on fabricated brackets. This is OK on a Griff with non-vertical radiator but it wouldn't be possible to mount the pump in the same place on a Chimaera, as the radiator is too close to the chassis. I've helped another guy out with a pre-cat Griff and he positioned his pump behind the offside headlight, in the cavity where the charcoal can goes on a cat car.
I think that person was me... If it helps I may still have some pics of brackets , hoses etc. To mount my pump in the inner wing, keeping the pump well away from any heat and keeping the engine bay tidy. This may not be possible in your case with filters etc. I encountered several problems along the way and appreciated the help I received.

Yeh it was you Rob, how's it going ?? PAS still working OK. I still say it's the best mod I've done to my car. Ignore the muppets saying 'it's for whimps', how would they know, they haven't got PAS !!

Power steering is for wimps - or that's what Mrs FFG said.

I used to think the same way until i did the conversion on my 2nd Griff, now I am a definate convert to the benifits of PAS...
The two main benefits i found were better stability at high speeds from the natural damping effect of the PAS so a ton plus is now no longer a white knuckle ride.
The more notable benefit is the ability to control the car on track, prior to PAS i found it nigh on impossible to catch a "twitch" and would end up facing the wrong way, with PAS i have far more control as i am now able to react quick enough to catch it and even hold it which i couldnt before.
Although the factory setup does numb the feedback a little, its no where near as much as I was expecting.
This doesn't look a bad idea

Bet it's expensive!

But non PAS Griffs have a LOOOONG steering rack so it takes hours to turn the wheels from lock to lock
Incidentally, if I did get a true eletric PAS system, can I just drain the PAS rack and use it as a normal rack, or will it disagree with this and sieze up?
And if so, can I get a quick "manual" rack for reasonable money? (Given that the assist comes from the steering column now)

1. The pump won't be there, so not a problem. In fact there won't be a pump at all.
2. If I go for what I want (as in the link) there will be a motor on the steering column providing "on demand" electric PAS. However, I was concerned (as you say) about it being loaded up by the additional friction from the rack internals.

if you get a MOT tester worth hes oats hes gonna frown on an assisted rack with no oil or plumbing, and rightly so if the piston seal dries out thru lack of lube you will get stiction on the ram assembly(dangerous)could cause steering to jam.i do not recommend this, unless ive understood this wrong its a no go mod.fit manual rack with electric column assistance.
