Oil pump priming tip.

Had to change my oil a couple of days ago and had a bit of a mishap while doing it, car slipped off the jack and landed on my hand breaking my thumb, so was a while without oil and the pump had drained while at the hospital. I went to my local land rover specialist who kindly lent me their priming tool, which was basically a distributor with the cam part ground off.

Just popped it in the dizzy slot and spun it using a drill, oil pressure was returned very quickly, I'll give LRR (London Range Rovers) in SE London a mention for lending me the tool.

I bought an old dizzy while there and will make up one myself at some stage.

Another tip, don't hold a trolley jack while pumping it up

Yes the car did get off lightly with just a few scratches on the chassis, although I'm sure it was shaking when I opened the garage door holding a petrol can a matches earlier

there used to be a kit on the market which allowed you to fit a primer permamently,operated by a switch,never seen one in use though.
good luck with the thumb anyway.

did you jack up the car and work on it without any axle stands?

if so, this would be a fundemental schoolboy error.

Glad you were'nt seriously hurt though.

Never trust a jack under the car, your life is balanced on a 1mm wide rubber seal!!!!

No I had done the oil change using axle stands, I'd let the car down and was jacking it back up again when the jack slipped, I was using my left hand to get the jack into position and left it on the jack while pumping it up. think I might invest in a properly garage style trolley jack as don;t really trust that one now, also when my dad removed it from under the car while I was at the hospital he said the jack was down so might have been the jack failing.
