Juddering at low speed in reverse

What the title says really.It doesnt do it every time,and also does it going forward sometimes(much more common/pronounced in reverse though) ,also at low speed pulling away/manouvering.It's getting more frequent as time passes,but in it's early days i had a few things checked for wear,ie diff bushes,prop uj,driveshafts.It doesnt seem so much like slack being taken up,as it goes on for a few yards.It also only apparently happens when letting the clutch out at low engine speed.

most likely an oil leak from either the crank seal or gear box input shaft.

Sounds like it could be spots of oil on the clutch driven plate as suggested.

If you can get underneath have a look through the inspection hole at the bottom of the bellhousing and see how much oil has been splattered around the inside, which must have come from either engine or box. then check oil level in gearbox to see if that gives you a clue as to which it is coming from.

Cheers both,i'll look there first,it'll be on the ramps on Friday.Just one thought,why would oil contamination of the clutch cause these symptoms more so in reverse?Is it because of the direction the friction material is worn in?

I'm not saying it isn't contaminated plates but mine did this when the diff mounting bracket had cracked, something which was checked at a very reputable dealer who advised that I needed a new diff! Took it somewhere else as I didn't think it was the diff and a new one with new bushes was fitted for not a lot of money and has been fine for 40k.

Hi Mike,

Both my previous 4.0 litre and the current 5.3 suffer from the same vibrations. The 5.3 has been out recently at V8D and stripped down, i'm sure that the clutch plate would have been replaced had it been contaminated with oil.

I can't understand how oil could cause a judder in any case, surely it would reduce the tendency to judder not make it worse.

I think its probably bedded well in and just snatches slightly as it starts to bite.

I had a similar problem but only in reverse when it juddered/fealt tight when reversing. A well respected dealer told me it can be caused by the wrong oil in the diff (at least I think it was the diff). I was sceptical but they changed the oil and its been perfect for the last 2 years!!

After a thorough check over on the ramps today,it looks like it is sticking rear brake(s).This seems to occur mostly when hot,and happened again when i returned home.I noticed that even with the clutch fully depressed,the judder occured whilst rolling slowly backwards down my drive,definately from the rear.
Is there a rebuild kit available for these calipers?I'll check that the discs arent warped also.Any experiences/advice is most welcome,cheers all,Mike.

I magaged to get a recon one for £31 and you give them the old one. which I thought was Ok and easy.
I think you can get seal kits.
