I am wanting to fit an oil cooler to my V8S (yes I know this is the Griff site) but I would think that the Griff boys would have more info about this as there are not as many V8s's about. Anyway with that out of the way I use my car for trackdays only so it is getting a hard life all the time and think I should be doing as much as possible to help it keep cool. Have seen the oil cooler kits in Rimmers etc but measuring from the bottom of the oil filter to the chassis cross member there is approx 30mm from bottom of filter the cross member so if I put on the extension for the oil pipe fitings there is no chance of screwing on the filter. Has anyone fitted a cooler and if so how. Don't seem to see any threads about this subject so perhaps it is not possible. Over to you boys (and girls).

I had a 15-row oil/air cooler on the V8S for a few years. It just used an ordinary sandwich plate with integral stat, plenty of room. The matrix was fitted on edge in the gap between the radiator support and the plywood panel on the inside of the bonnet. It's off the car now and I'm planning to replace it with a Laminova oil/water heater/cooler.

Hi GV8s. You have lost me a bit. I know there will be no problem fitting the cooler but how deep was the extension you fitted as for the life of me I just cannot see were the room comes from for it.Do you still have it and I would buy it from you.

the great thing about the water/oil heat exchanger type is that because the coolant warms more rapidly than the motor oil it transfers this heat to the oil making it circulate quicker, thus less wear on things like that stressed camshaft for example.just remember the hotter the oil gets the more that heat is passed to the coolant, making your cooling system condition vital.i had one of these for a XR3i escort,on a screaming FORD X/FLOW very high state of tune and it did the business, nice stable oil temp & pressure and no oil cooler pipes to worry about chaffing or bursting.recommended if your oil filter area as the space.most production car high powered models use this arrangment, whats good for the goose.......

It's about an inch and a quarter long. The oil filter is 4" long (FRAM PH5443) and misses the chassis diagonal quite easily.

Yes, I'm viewing it as an oil heater as well as a cooler. I have substantial excess capacity in the cooling system. I don't know, but from what I can see of the oil stat in the old sandwich plate it looks to be very restrictive and a full flow oil cooler might lose less pressure. The pipes will be quite long so I'm gong to be generous on the oil lines and go for AN12, hopefully that will avoid any excessive pressure drop.

I know these engines have pretty good oil/water conduction anyway and an oil cooler is probably overkill, but there's a lot of heat going into mine and I want to make sure the oil temp is well within tolerance.

Just back from under the car. Have measured from the bottom of the filter to the cross member and it is 1 1/2". Filter is err3340 and is 4" but filter would have to screw out approx 1/2" when changing. Were did you get the kit and I could ring them and get the exact measurement of the extension. Did you find it kept the oil pressure up when tracking.

It's a Mocal sandwich plate with integral stat. But there's no need to ring them for dimensions - it's here in my hand. The fitted length is an inch and a quarter. There's no trouble getting the filter on and off. Remember the filter and chassis tube are both at an angle, the chassis tube has a curved surface and the end of the filter is curved two ways - in practice there's plenty of room.

I've never had any particular problems with oil pressure under load, but when it's really hot the pressure at idle would drop off.

Ray, hear it was a good one at the weekend (sorry I missed it, again!) have had an oil cooler on booth of my carss does keep the pressure up. Still seems to get hot (trackdays) 130 so last time out I took off the front number plate and that did the trick max 100, am planing over the winter to cut a grill into the lower front panel to get better airflow.

As treat am off to the Nurburgring in a few weeks with some friends from home (2x997,360,DB9 and an AMV8) which should be fun

I concur, I opened up the grill, then added spoiler, then drilled 3 x 65mm holes in the undertray (in front of oil cooler and air filter) and found it impossible to get temp above 90c. I also added ally shrouds to deflect air from grill going into wings.

Yes Mark you missed a cracker track day,John and myself had a great last run, never went as hard (not that we were doing anything bad) as it was only a trackday you understand but it was the first time the marshals claped John and myself on the cool down lap. Have you an oil cooler on yours at the minute and if so I want a good look at it asap.If you are about on th 29th there is a trackskills track day and I think Garth and Trevor are doing it.Who fitted your cooler.

Cheers GV8S. Do you know were you got yours as I went onto their web site but the seem to be for trade only. Is it the same as the Rimmers one.

Ray and another thought, I had an oil temp gauge fitted as well (replaced the clock with it) found a company who matched the existing gauges (yellow with the TVR logo)

Good luck Mark

Which company? And where did you insert the sender? Thanks, David.

David, I had the sender tapped into the sandwich plate (adapter in/out for the oil cooler) and the guage came from these guys, £65 all in I seem to remember.
