Had the Austec Racing 21 gun salute mod done to my exhaust in the summer (more through necessity as my box was split), it sounds very good but is going to exclude me from most track days. (of which I am hoping to get on regularily)

It was measured at 118 Db's at the Growl this year at 4K.

I am imagining I am going to need to buy a complete new system to bring it down sufficiently to stand a chance of getting it under 105 Db

Just wondering what sort of reduction the additional (but slightly displeasing to the eye) bolt on ACT silencers will make

Anyone done a before / after ?

Anyone wanna swap an Austec system for a standard ? I could jack both up on my driveway and do a straight swap if interested. Crackles a good 'un and howls beautifully above 4K

Seems to depend on the tester. The ACT cans reduce my sound track by 10-15db depending on MSE or Combe check.

Does it affect the Cats/pre-cats at all? I have a totally standard 500SE and have just booked it in with Dave Batty for its annual service & his straight through exhaust conversion. I am keen to make more noise but not at the expense of removing the cats or pre-cats.
Couple of other questions;
Are the 500 & 500SE exhaust systems identical in standard trim?
Is it just a matter of unbolt one, bolt on the new one?
What do the pipes look like (similar to the standard ones or are they twin)?
Where in Hants are you? (Are you likely to be at the Hants meet on 22nd?)
Cheers!
Alan

Hi Alan

Mine is a standard 500 system. The pre-cats and main cats are still in situ. Do not know enough about the 500 / 500 se differences if any I am afraid

Single pipe from downtube into twin entry single box, through box (with no interferance) and into the standart two tail pipes. It's stainless throughout by the way

Can be drived quite quietly, back off from over 3000 and there's a very pleasing crackle

I will hopefully be at West Meon for my first TVRCC doo. Happy to take you for a spin so you can hear before deciding. Live in Southampton on the edge of the new forest (pipes are great for clearing the way of horses )

Happy to do the crawling about underneath if it is a case of straight swap, and have a mate who could be on standby who is a fantastic welder should any mods be required.

I'll be sad to take it off I must admit, but as I really want to make the most of some regular track days, the thought of having to swap the system everytime doesn't fill me with joy

Let me know

Cheers

Andy

That's about what I thought it would be.

A bit too close for comfort

Be a right pain travelling 6 hours to Croft and not get on the track, all because of a few measly Db's

What's the matter with these people, why do they buy houses near race tracks anyway if they are bothered about noise

Grr

OK, Andy. Let's have a bit of a crawl about underneath on the 22nd. My first meet as well - Thursdays were never on for me, so it'll be good to meet up with a few locals.

It's possible to get exhaust tailpipe inserts which can be used in conjunction with the external cans. The inserts alone are usually worth in the region of 3-5 dB at the cost of some power loss at the top end. I don't know what reduction the whole lot would give you, but might be worth taking some along as an insurance policy if you think it's marginal. You can get inserts from Jetex, Merlin, Tower View and possibly ACT (They don't all sell identical stuff, but they all fit in broadly the same way and have a similar effect.)

Andy, I've just checked the ACT website. Is it the "Cherry bomb" exhaust that you had fitted?

In a word...No

I was asking about ACT bolt on silencers, but my exhaust is a standard Stainless TVR exhaust that has been modified by AUSTEC Racing in Crawley. Basically they cut open and remove one or two bits from the centre box and stich it up again.

Negligable difference to performance but big change in sound.

Hope this helps

Andy

Yup, gotcha! Getting myself confused there. Basically a straight through conversion of similar type to what I was going to get anyway. OK, see you on the 22nd!

My ACT silencers reduce 105dB to 95 @ Elvington where there is a right jobsworth. Croft I've never had to use them and at Oulton park I just get by without them.

I think you should go for it - It was a spectacular noise. I chickened out cos of fear of reprisals! Hope you don't have nasty neighbours!

As an aside - Andy, it was interesting to see your roof mod in the flesh and see what you can do with a Griff even on the road (even with that much water about, and I admit I was a bit terrified!)
I'm off to book myself a Ride Drive course
See you next month
Cheers!

Successful swap carried out yesterday (with a little bit of jiggling about)

She now purrs a good en

Must admit nicer on the long run home, but I am gonna miss the full on Spitfire sound effects

Tower View inserts seem nice and easy to fit, hopefully I'll never have to use them

Anyone got a decimeter I can borrow ?

Thanks again Slacey and enjoy your slightly more vocal Griff once they've sorted your diff

Cheers
