The Griffernator has developed what my mechanic calls, Dif backlash. He says not to worry about it, but it seems to have got worse; it clunks like 
when pulling away in first gear (sometimes). Dulfords say it will cost between £450 and £600 to get it refurbed.
What about getting one from a breakers, wouldn't that be a lot cheaper?

You could try asking around for prices, but of course you have no idea what condition it's in and you still have to pay the labour charges. Personally, I would have thought getting your reconditioned was a more sensible approach, but it isn't my money.
Do make sure it really is backlash in the diff and not just worn CV joints or loose diff mounting bushes.
I got a diff from Bell Hill. Even though the ratio tag screwed to the casing had the same numbers, the ratio was quite a lot different. Not a problem in my case as I prefer the higher gearing. Also I turned out to be lucky on the condition of the replacement part but it is a gamble. In retrospect it seems to make more sense to drop out your faulty Diff, have it repaired and then refit it. That way you know what you are getting for the money. Fairly simple task to drop it out provided you can borrow a lift or you have a pit. While it is away being re-built you will probably want to clean and repaint the bits of chassis that are exposed.
. As Peter said, check the diff mount rubber bushes first. This is the usual cause of what you describe.
The driveshaft CV joints and prop uj's are another possibility.
Depending on mileage and type of use the car has had, i would expect there to be wear in all the drivetrain.
It is better to isolate each individual part before embarking on a costly diff rebuild.

Got the diff back this week from Competition Transmissions (gearbox man). Total cost icluding VAT was £394 - a bargain compared to the price of secondhand units which are more than that with no real guarantee of mileage or condition!
Broken down there was the initial strip and rebuild cost, then diff bearings & seals, collapsible spacer and seal, modified shim pack, 2 output bearings and 2 collars.
I would definitely recommend them for any diff or gearbox work.

What part of the country is this place? Let us know how you dif is when you get the car out.
