Going off Tiv's..............
Discussion
Ok, maybe not, but it's a close call......
After my hassle with the battery yesterday, decided to take the Griff to work today. Out at lunchtime and just as pulling back into the office the engine starts going nuts...
I was only going 10-15mph, when the rev's suddenly jumped up on their own when I took it out of gear, this happend a couple of times, and then went back to idle again. Fine, thought I, another lovely feature...... But no, the car now sounds like a bl**dy tractor!! Had no choice but to keep driving as was blocking the security gate (oh the joys....), and pulled into a space sharpish and shutdown. By this time it was still driveable, but sounding terrible and a very slight smell of burning wafted up....
Luckily nothing was alight! I've checked all the HT connections, and most other connections in the engine and ECU loom, nothing was loose. After my nightmare rebuild last year I haven't got the nerve to restart her, anyone got any ideas for me to check before I do?

Sounds like it's over fuelling for some reason, is it a strong petrol smell? Could be prob with lamda sensors. fairly easy to check I believe.
i had a similar prob with mine which was caused by a dry connection betwwen the loom for the lamda sensore an dthe ECU.
Off course it could be something completely different...someone more qualified withh be along in a moment I'm sure

Whereabouts is this connection, or do you mean the actual connector as it plugs into the manifold?

Quite possibly, but any help is appreciated
Presumably the horrible tractor-like sounds was a misfire. In that case, the burning smell was probably from the cats which were probably starting to glow. Since you switched off shortly afterwards you may have got away without catastrophic damage to them. You do need to be wary of driving for longer than a couple of minutes with a misfire though because the cats can easily get hot enough to melt wiring and pipes around them and set fire to things, in extreme cases you will even find the insides of the car literally melt and come out as molten metal/glass.

Crikey!!
Well, it was a matter of a minute or so, no longer, so fingers crossed....
I've just started her up again, and after a quick cough all was well. Idled fine, no hunting, etc...There was a slight waft of smoke near the passenger side manifold gasket, but quickly went away, not sure exactly what this was....??? The only other thing I noticed, and this could be just because I'm been paranoid, but the oil pressure seems unusually high, after start up was sitting just below the top mark on the guage. Now I know it's normally high on startup, but can't remember ever seeing it this high. The oil isn't full, it's probably around 75% on the marker, and is a good colour. Any idea what would cause high oil pressure??
please excuse any numptiness, complete novice when it comes to cars, not that you'd notice...

The relief valve can become stuck if exposed to a lot of heat. My cat glowed when i had a coil induced misfire and two weeks later the valve stuck open causing no oil pressure.
It was maybe a coincidence but i have read about heat induced sticking.
The relief valve should "kick in" at 50 on the gauge.
