Intermitent poor running

Picked up my new Griff a couple of weeks ago (Hello by the way!) since collecting it I have had problems with the engine.
Almost at random the engine feels like it holding back, and runs on less than all 8 cylinders, combined with poor fuel economy and a strong smell of fuel so its obviously running very rich. It also stalls on occasion which could be the stepper motor possibly.
Dropped it into my local indie garage last week, they have since changed the HT leads, coil, ignition amplifier and checked all wiring and connections but this has not rectitifed the problem.
Can anybody suggest what might be causing this?

See if it runs OK after switching off, waiting 30 secs or so and restarting. If so, could be momentary interruption to the power supply to the ecu (look at relays and relay connections & ecu connector) or the ecu itself. On a cat car it might also be a funny lamba sensor causing the ecu to get the fuelling very wrong. Could be 101 things as well (eg sticky injector(s)), but those are my best guesses.
Try this - make sure the fuel filler cap is not tightened.. so it allows a little air to get in - and try it again.
If it fixes the problem then the fuel breather is blocked at the rear of the tank - this stops the fuel sometimes.
Worth a try.

Also - if it's a garage ask them to shove a lamba meter up each exhaust - is it both banks of cylinders.. could be just on cylinder is not firing and causing an overall problem - the unused fuel has to go somewhere and that place is into the other cylinders.

Thanks for the replies, the car had a complete engine rebuild by TVR power 3000 miles ago so I don't think it could be a worn camshaft (fingers crossed!) the garage replaced the fuel pump and injector relays this afternoon and seem to think that they have cured the problem picking it up tomorrow so we shall see.....
